First of all, I should tell you a little about myself. I never in my whole life imagined that I was anything but heterosexual. I was raised in a small town, I was expected to marry, have babies…yadda yadda yadda.
Well, of course, I did all that…well mostly. I went to college, became a teacher, married my high school sweetheart, tried to have babies…to no avail. I wasn’t fertile so Mr. High school sweetheart left me after 6 years of marriage. In the eyes of my family it was pretty disgraceful that my husband left me and I didn’t have any children so I ended up moving to the city about a year after we divorced, quit my teaching job and got a job as a journalist (I was an English major in college).
So anyways, I met a bunch of great friends and went on a few dates, but nothing really came of it. One day I was at work and my friend Judy came up to me and said she wanted me to meet a friend of hers, Freddie. I agreed to go out for a drink with Freddie and so Judy set it up for us to meet at a small bar in uptown.
After work I went home and showered, pulling my curly red hair up in a French twist and putting on a hunter green short dress that set off the green of my eyes. I have to admit, I think I’m pretty attractive; curly red hair to my shoulder blades, big green eyes, about 5’5, 135 pounds, 36C.
Well I was thinking I looked pretty good for the night. So I went to the bar to meet Freddie and here’s what happened….
Pulling up to the bar, I parked my red dodge and shut off the engine. I took a deep breath and walked into the bar. I didn’t know what Freddie looked like cause Judy told me that Freddie had seen a picture of me and would know me. So I sat at the bar and ordered a beer to wait for Freddie.
About 5 minutes later, I felt a hand on my shoulder and I turned around. Standing in front of me was a woman about 5’9 or 5’10, brown hair cut like a man. She was wearing black pants with a fitted white button up shirt. She had a tie and as I looked at her feet saw her manly type shoes. She was really quite something I had never seen before.
“Yes?” I asked.
“Hi.” She smiled. “You’re Louise right?”
“Yes I am.” I returned her smile, although mine showed a bit of confusion. I had never seen this woman in my life.
“I’m Freddie.”
My jaw dropped. THIS was Freddie? Ummm…what was going on…had I misunderstood Judy in thinking this was a date when it was actually just meeting a new friend or something? No, I’m sure that Judy said that it was a date type of thing.
“Umm…I’m sorry…YOU’RE Freddie?”
“Well yes.”
“I…umm…I think there has been some misunderstanding. I was erm…thinking you were a guy.”
Freddie looked down at herself and shook her head. “Nope, I’m really quite female.”
“B-but…you’re name is Freddie…” I said stupidly.
“Yeah, short for Fredericka.”
I was speechless. “I’m sorry; did Judy tell you I was a guy?”
“Well…” I searched my memory…”No, she really didn’t. She just said her friend Freddie.”
“Ahhh…and you assumed right?”
“Well…yes…I mean…I’m not…well…” God, I’m a friggin journalist and I couldn’t think of a WORD to say. I’m a pathetic excuse for an English major, ex English teacher, journalist, let me tell you.
She laughed. “Well nothing has to happen, why don’t we just have a drink?” She offered.
“Well…okay…” What the hell else was I supposed to say?
Freddie sat beside me and ordered a Vodka tonic and they brought it with another beer for me. I played with the wrapper on my beer, trying to think of something to say.
“So what do you do?”
“I’m an editor.”
“Do you like it?”
“Yes, I really do. I get a chance to read books before anyone else.”
I nodded for the sake of doing something.
“So Judy tells me you like to read?”
“Oh yes, love to.” I answered.
We started talking about our favourite authors and books, which lead into movies and music, and foods and before I knew it, I’d had 6 beers and she’d had 4 vodka tonics. I’m a lightweight so I was pretty intoxicated by this time. I glanced at my watch and giggled.
“Holy smokes. It’s nearly 1 am.”
“So it is…” Her eyes were slightly glazed over as she looked at me.
“I’m sorry Louise, but I have to be blunt. You are an extremely attractive woman and I really enjoy your company. I’d really like to see you again.”
I don’t know if it was the drinks or what but I smiled and nodded.
“I really like you to Freddie and I’d love to see you again.”
She smiled.
“Okay ladies, bars about to close, time to get going.” The bartender said to us.
“Shit.” I said. “I can’t drive like this.”
“C’mon,” Freddie stood up. “I’ll call a taxi.” She whipped out her cell phone. “I took a taxi here so that I didn’t have to worry about this.” She called the taxi service, and had them come out.
“How am I going to get my car?” I whined.
“Well…” She pondered as we stumbled outside to wait for our taxi. “I have an extra room. Just stay at my house then I’ll drive you here in the morning to pick up your car.”
Again, maybe it was my drunkenness, but I nodded enthusiastically.
“Yeah, that’ll work.”
When the taxi got there, Freddie gave her address and within 15 minutes we pulled up in front of a really nice apartment building. Freddie paid the driver and we got out, going up to the door. She pulled out her keys and we went in, taking the elevator up to the 9th floor. She opened her door to a
beautiful apartment done in a contemporary style. I flopped down on the couch.
“Do you want something to drink or eat?”
“I think I drank enough tonight.” I giggled.
She smiled and sat down beside me on the couch, turning her body so she was half facing me. We started to talk about life and soon I got to talking about my ruined marriage. Freddie was an exceptional listener and nodded and made all the proper sounds at all the proper times.
“UGH! The only reason I married Mark was because it was expected of me.” I shook my head, rubbing my hands over my face to clear out my thoughts. “He is SUCH an ass.”
Freddie put her hand over mine comfortingly. My eyes fell down to her hand covering mine, and then went up to meet hers. My lips parted and my eyes widened as I stared into her deep blue eyes.
“I…”
“Shhh…” She murmured. “Don’t.”
I didn’t.

As in leaned forward and kissed me ever so softly. It was a brief kiss, but it sent tingles through my body. We stared at each other for a few moments and then I leaned forward and pressed my lips to hers. Our mouths opened and her hand came to the back of my neck as we kissed deeply. When we
pulled back, both of us were gasping. I had never been kissed with such passion and intensity…and I’d never been so damn affected by a simple kiss.
We stared at each other again for a few seconds then leaned into each other for another kiss, this one even more passionate and intense then the last. Her hand undid my French twist and my curls came falling down my shoulders. She wound them in her fingers, pressing on my head lightly. I brought my arms around her waist and we deepened the kiss.
Freddie was massaging my hair and I was massaging her back. She pressed me into the sofa and was on top of me without breaking the kiss. I was a little stuck though. I didn’t know if I was supposed to go down on her now. She seemed to be settling herself. Of course, I would be more than willing to try it…Before my thoughts could go much further she answered my unspoken question, like she could hear my thoughts.
