As Hailey complained about the boys, Christie looked across the table in sympathy. She knew that even if he had asked her out, she would have refused him. She would have given him some bullshit answer about not wanting to change things between the two of them, but in reality, it would have come down to the fact that …

Christie tossed and turned in bed that night, unable to fall asleep.

Why was she doing this? What gave the right to try and control him this way?

Christie was just as shocked as Chris was. Was she really jealous of Hailey? Did she really feel that possessive of Chris?
Chris just gaped at her, too shocked to speak. But when he did finally manage to find his voice, he just made her more upset.

Tears welled up in his eyes, and the look on his face tore Christie’s heart out, but she just couldn’t stop herself. She couldn’t tell if she was angry at him, herself, Hailey, or all three of them.

There was still no anger, just a deep reservoir of sadness, and he turned away from her.
As soon as he looked away, Christie fled outside, fighting back tears. She retreated to a far alcove where no one would see her, and she sat down to have a good cry.
