In the gray dawn, I took fresh water and bread into the basement. Eve was asleep, huddled under the blanket. I poured the dirty wash water into the bucket and dumped it into the pipe to the cesspit. I returned the bucket,along with a brush and comb to the basement. Eve woke as the bucket dropped to the floor. I sat and pointed to the floor before the chair. She scrambled into position and as I presented a morsel of the bread opened her mouth for it. I fed her small bites of bread and sips of water for a time, then placed the rest of the bread on a shelf out of her reach. I had her recite the rules and punishments for me. The small amount of food had strengthened her a little, her voice held a little more life.
“Stand, Eve.” I commanded.
She stood before me, making no effort to hide her nakedness.
“Feel your breasts and sex, look at yourself.” I said.

She nodded dumbly, trying to understand the, to her, strange idea
“I can make people do anything I want,” I continued, “I could make you sit still in one place, unmoving, until you died of thirst and starvation, or make you walk into a fire.”
Under a light compulsion, one that left her aware of her actions, I caused her to walk to the cages and crawl into one, pulling the door closed, then returned her to stand before me.
“I can know the contents of anyone’s mind,” I said, “their deepest secrets, and fears. I can take away memories or manufacture new memories.”
She stood, shaking, staring at me as a young rabbit might stare at a snake. I looked into her mind, shuffling through her memories.
“You fear spiders and snakes, and rats.” I said, “You have been selling yourself from the age of thirteen, often for pennies. You killed a man for the dollar in his pocket. You were taken by another man at the age of twelve.”
Her eyes filled with fear and despair.
I gently made her a new memory of she and I at a table in evening wear, being served by maids and butlers with fine wines and succulent food.
“Do you recall the dinner we had together?” I said.
She nodded, confused as she tried to reconcile the memory of that dinner with her life as a street urchin.
“Get yourself into one of the cages, Eve.” I commanded.
She hesitantly walked to the cages and entered one.
That is where one of your sisters will be if you break my rules.” I said, “I’m certain you can imagine what they might feel in your place.”
She shuddered and tears leaked from her eyes.
I had her come back to me and pushed back the years until she looked as she had before. I stood, looking down into her eyes.
Eve, I could have had you in any way, at any time, anywhere without any resistance from you, but I have found such liaisons unsatisfying. Other in the demonstration a moment ago, I have never controlled you. Struck you, forced you? Of course, but never controlled your mind.”
She slowly nodded, as I watched emotions play across her face.
“Open my trousers and take me in your hands.” I commanded.
She hesitantly complied.
“Feel the size of it, the girth, the length.”
She ran her hands over my shaft, gently exploring.
“Think about your sisters and what this would do to them, if I were so inclined.”
She looked up at me, fear and begging in her eyes.

After breakfast, I told the housekeeper to take them to town, the gardener would drive, and buy them appropriate clothing as befitted my wards as well as a dress and other women’s things for a girl of sixteen, and gave her approximations of height and weight, who would be joining us soon. I gave her money for shopping, suggesting a few small toys would not be inappropriate.
I went to my study to deal with matters of the farm for a few hours. After, I collected a jar of Vaseline and thin shift, left behind by Ellen, then went out to the barns to have a bale of clean straw delivered up to the house along with a canvas mattress bag. I saddled my horse and rode to a neighbor who I heard had married a school teacher. After introductions, I explained that I had recently acquired two young wards who had not the benefit of schooling and asked if she would be willing to tutor them in my house for a suitable fee. Back at home I saw the straw and bag by the back door. I carried these down and made a second trip for the old shift and Vaseline. Eve, knelt on her blanket, head down waiting for my instructions. “Again, you have done well.” I told her, “after you clean yourself, you may wear the sift and stuff straw into the bag to make yourself a mattress.”
She nodded without raising her head
“I have a new rule for you,” I continued, “You will never reveal to anyone what you have learned of my abilities or what happens here in the basement.”
She nodded
“Before I go,” I began, “have you ever had a man in your anus?”
She jumped a little, shocked by the question and shook her head ‘no’.
“No matter, we will deal with that in due time.” I said as I left.
