They had heard the shot a year ago. His mom had been a mess since he left, unable to recall large amounts of her past, and finally, mercifully, she had chosen to end it by her own hand.
Jake was numb. He had done this to her, at first by accident and then on purpose. He had left because he would have been a stranger to her after his command to forget, but her family had been her primary focus for almost 20 years…of course losing those memories would have had a profound effect on her mind! How could he have been so stupid?!
Jake sat on a bus bench and cried. What was the point? What was the point of any of it? He had looked at his gift as just that: a gift from God or something, but he had destroyed his family with it!
Something hit him from the side and he went down hard, his head ringing.
“I can’t believe you came back, you fucking asshole!”
Jake saw a two-years-older version of Randy Bowles bearing down on him. He opened his mouth to tell Randy to stop but a kick to his ribs took his breath away. Then there was another, and another. He felt something crack and then his world became pain.
Then Randy was on top of him, punching him in the face again and again. Jake couldn’t say anything to stop him! He could barely draw a breath!
Randy stopped punching and put his hand over Jake’s mouth. “I don’t know how you did it, Jake, but you’ll never control me again.” Jake heard something click and saw a knife in Randy’s hand.
*STOP!* Jake screamed in his head, his mind on overdrive with adrenaline. Randy stopped.
*Get off of me!* The other young man did so. Jake groaned as he sat up. He could speak again. “Drop the knife.” Clunk.
Jake had told Randy to forget Jake’s involvement in the equipment room incident two years previous. If Randy was remembering, then Jake’s long-term commands must have a time limit after all!
He also realized that if that was true then he wouldn’t be able to just command Randy to forget again, as it would wear off. What could he do?
Just then he saw a large delivery truck speeding down the road.
“Randy, face the street.” He did so. The truck was close now.
“Run forward!” Jake urged, wincing as his ribs rebelled.
WHAM! There was a screech of tires, and Randy Bowles’ dead body careened down the road, finally coming to rest on the yellow line.

His ribs bandaged by the fine folks at the local hospital after he jumped the triage queue, Jake went by his Uncle Brad’s house. He found his cousin Sandra just coming out of the house, pushing a toddler in a stroller.
Jake stepped forward. “Sandra?”
“Jake!” Sandra’s face lit up with a smile and she rushed forward to embrace him. He groaned in pain from the tight hug.
She stepped back. “Are you okay? Oh, your face…”
His cheek was swollen from Randy’s punches. “Just a misunderstanding. Is that…” he pointed to the young redheaded boy.
“Oh, yes, I got pregnant a couple years ago.” She looked at him demurely. “It’s my boyfriend’s.” She winked at him. “Mom got pregnant around the same time. Dad’s, of course.” Again the wink.
His long-term commands held with her and her mom! So that trick worked on some people but not others. He’d have to see if he could figure out why, and determine who could throw it off.
He looked down at the 1-year-old boy in the stroller, bored and fussing. He was adorable!
He had fathered two babies! Did that offset the deaths of his parents? He had to believe it did. If his ribs weren’t killing him he would have suggested a repeat performance with his hot now-MILF cousin with her larger boobs. Instead, he said goodbye and got on with his life.

More time passed, moving from place to place. He had sex with so many women that he lost count. He’d fuck different women multiple times a day as he went here and there, getting free meals and accommodation wherever he went.

Now:
He was coming to the end. He asked Anna to bring him the hospital administrator. As the older man laid his hand on Jake’s prone form Jake pushed the same thought into his head that he had given Anna earlier.
Then the hospital administrator asked the entire staff to come lay their hands on Jake. A long line led out of his room. They were all given the same command, and then Anna would write down each person’s name, phone number, and home address. She also brought him whatever patients and visiting friends and family she could con into his room, doing the same with them.
Jake’s head was killing him, literally, by this point. He had overextended himself. Dr. Mattrel held his hand as Jake concentrated on the younger man, forcing as much of his current thoughts as he could into him. Then with a sigh he was gone.
Dr. Mattrel stood up and went out to the hallway. “Hey,” he said to a young boy waiting outside one of the other rooms who hadn’t been brought in for Jake’s “treatment”.
“Yeah?” the boy said, warily.
“Jump up and down,” the man commanded.
The boy gave him an odd look and stuck his tongue out before slipping away.
Well, that answers that question, the man decided. He returned to Jake’s room.
Anna was there, covering Jake’s body with his bed sheet. “Is there anything else I can do for you, Dr. Mattrel?”
“Yes, Anna, you can bend over…and call me Jake.”
A person is the product of their experiences, and all of Jake’s memories were now in Dr. Mattrel’s head. He had lost the ability to control minds, however that had worked, but with his forethought and planning he now had dozens of slaves who had visited the hospital and been given long-term commands to obey him just as they would the Jake who died, and that would have to do.
The king is dead; long live the king, he thought to himself.
