BOOK TWO: MATURING:

A NEW ADVENTURE:

The next morning, Jimmy and his family went to the recruitment center as he had been ordered to do. There were about twenty other guys there and the sergeant. Parked in the lot was a bus. The sergeant grouped them together and pictures were taken by him and by the parents and friends who had gathered to see the young men off. Jimmy noticed that none of ‘his’ girls were present. The sergeant led them in ‘the pledge of allegiance’ and told them to enter the bus. As he took his place on the bus, he waved at his folks and settled down for the adventure ahead, he noticed that some of the guys looked familiar. A couple of classmates were here, but no one that he knew well. He was actually happy about that. He would be able to experience this adventure solo, just as he desired it to be. Fewer explanations would be necessary that way.

A few hours later they were on an airplane heading to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas with their first orders in hand. A simple listing of all the names of those who joined with him that morning in his home town ordering them to basic training on military letterhead. As they flew south to Phoenix first, he felt a peacefulness in his heart that he had not felt for some time. And a confidence that resulted from it. He was curious about what was ahead of him, but not fearful. He would just take it as it comes.

After a brief stop in Phoenix, which was 85 degrees even late at night, the plane landed in San Antonio and they were bused to the base. It was very early in the morning and they had had very little sleep. They were very tired, but perhaps that worked well for them, because it lessened their reactions to the stress they were feeling under the circumstances.

They experienced a very jarring entry into military life. More paperwork, haircuts, uniforms and assorted equipment issued (accompanied by confiscation of everything they brought with them except for jewelry they wore and their wallet,) their first military meal (not bad at all,) assignment to their barracks (in groups of 60,) meeting their D.I. (drill instructor who would take a personal lead in their entry into military life and the training that would accompany it,) immediately starting training accompanied by lectures and visuals and enforcement of discipline all done with no patience at all.

Right on the first day they were assigned a bed, showed how to make it properly (a dime had to bounce on it when dropped) and showed how to fold their clothes and stow them in the foot locker at the foot of their bed. Lectures on sanitation, personal hygiene and a very vigorous lecture on honesty. Any theft would be dealt with sternly. They even had to sign each of the bills in their wallets. And deep trouble if you were found with someone else’s bills. It was very necessary since there was no privacy at all and they needed to be able to trust each other.

All of this was designed to mold them into soldiers who would be disciplined to follow orders and work as a unit. It was accompanied by loud shouting of the D.I. and close inspection of everything they did. Immediate reactions to any variations to standards were experienced. They had heard about Army and Marine Corps discipline. This was certainly not up to their standards. But, to some of the guys it was very jarring. No excuses at all were accepted for any violation of expected conduct. This was very different than what many of them had previously experienced, but especially hard to those from families that had been rather lax with them. Jimmy had little trouble with any of this and was surprised at how fast almost all of the guys adapted.

Jimmy had been primed by his dad to a number of things since he had been in the service also, the Navy. Don’t react to the psychological nonsense. Don’t ever volunteer for anything. Don’t stand out except in excellence. Keep your mouth shut. Keep your private matters private. Don’t complain about the food or anything else. Ignore the normal bumps and bruises of guys living together. Never go to the sergeant about anything, unless your life depended on it, and maybe not even then. Stand up for yourself. But, keep your hands to yourself. I tried to remain invisible and succeeded until the next to the last day, but that is another story.

They were informed by their D.I. that he had been Army before coming here to ‘break in the troops,’ so to speak. He didn’t seem unusually difficult to deal with to Jimmy, but he had little to compare him to. He was not friendly and was very stern, part of the job, Jimmy guessed. There was one guy in the flight (60 man unit that trained together) that came in for special attention by the sergeant. The kid was 19, tall and slim of build. He was very quiet, but evidently didn’t react to orders quickly enough to satisfy the sergeant. Perhaps, the D.I. saw something peculiar in him. And, he was riding the kid pretty hard. All of the guys noticed it. Felt bad for him, but what could they do? He had to just endure it and move on.

One day, the D.I. was riding him pretty hard, more than usual and the kid sort of snapped and called the D.I. out. The confident D.I. agreed, perhaps thought that he would teach the kid a lesson and advance the kid towards actually (in his eyes) becoming a satisfactory airman. Didn’t work out that way. The kid was a lot tougher than he looked and he put the D.I. into the hospital, with notable bumps and bruises. No charges were brought up against the kid, but he was cut loose from the Air Force family. Probably had the army calling at his door when he got home. Don’t think that the Marines would tolerate that kind of breach of discipline. We did get a new D.I, though.

The days rolled on one after another. The guys were mostly OK. They knew that most of them would never see each other again as they were assigned to different technical training centers, so few friendships were formed here. Jimmy met a couple of guys he really liked and as it turned out, both of them went to the same training base with him.

The only hitch on his tour in basic training was that it was terribly hot in San Antonio in June, July and part of August while he was there. He spent about six weeks there and as far as he could tell, the temperature never fell below 80 degrees while he was there, even at night. At times during the day it got up to 114 degrees. And it was bone dry in San Antonio. The combinations of those two factors awoke an old familiar problem, nose bleeds. He got one on the third day there and it lasted the rest of his stay at Lackland. Jimmy went all the way thru basic training with it and it got so bad about three weeks in, that they put him in a thermal bed, packed him with ice to lower his body temperature to help it stop it. It didn’t completely stop, but it did slow down to a mere trickle, which Jimmy was able to cope with. At its worst Jimmy had to meet with the unit commander and they offered to give him an honorable discharge, but Jimmy wouldn’t have anything to do with that. He wanted to finish what he had started.

As he left Lackland for Keesler Air Force base in Biloxi, Mississippi, he took with him these impressions: how few women there were there (the guys told me that they were all looking for officers anyway) which under the circumstances worked out as far as he was concerned, the burrs that infested all of the training grounds and how small and drab the Alamo was that he saw on his only outing to San Antonio. How could a building that was so important in history look so insignificant? Because of what happened there, not the building where it happened, he mused.

ON TO MISSISSIPPI:

They rode a bus (military) across East Texas, part of Arkansas, a corner of Louisiana and then into Mississippi. As soon as they arrived at Keesler, they could feel the difference. They still faced at least six more weeks of P.T. (physical training), but were now in a tech school not a hyped up training base. Only complaint at first was the bottled Coke which was more than twice the price per bottle than it had been a Lackland. It was still very much cheaper than what the people paid for it off base. They also quickly became aware of the high humidity and eighty degree temperatures of the Gulf Coast.

The guys had two days here to get settled-in in our barracks which were of a much higher order that those at Lackland. In fact the Air Force has a much higher standard in housing for its airmen (comparable to privates and corporals in the Army) than most of the rest of the military has for its NCO’s. Probably because except for pilots, the Air Force is military-light. Mostly a technical force with longer enlistment periods (six years to start, four of them active) because of the considerable time and expense to train, and better living conditions to encourage a high reenlistment rate.

The food was quite good. Military discipline was firm, but not oppressive. Everyone (even the officers within the limits of military protocol) was very friendly and the main atmosphere on the base was scholarly. The instruction level was very good. The equipment was not real advanced, but in very good repair. The curriculum was updated regularly, it seemed like it was daily sometimes. We were to spend months here, Jimmy stayed eight months.

They tended to form more friendships there, because they would be together for a longer time. There were still few women here and some of them were married. The single ones put out the feeling that they were not available to any trainee’s interest. No wonder, these guys tended to be very young, were to be here for only a few months and these females also tended to want to “associate’ with the officers, too. They appeared to have a ‘dense bark’ to isolate themselves from possible outreaches from the students. And no wonder, there were over 20 men on the base to every one of them. Must have been heaven for the lesser favored girls, to have all of this possible male attention available.

Jimmy had received one letter from his folks at Lackland, and sent them one and one to Sheila. They were just generic, “I am fine” kinds of missives. He was just so busy he didn’t have time to think of any more, much less to write more. Soon after he got to Keesler, though, he got his first letter from Sheila. It had three pictures in it: one very nice full height of Sheila in a nice dress, one of her without anything on and one of her and Jeannie in the same condition enjoying each other. Only the first one would ever be seen by anyone but him. In his next letter he sent a snapshot of himself in uniform, and a much more inclusive letter, along with genuine glee over the pics that she had sent.

While Jimmy was very acclimated to the school and the atmosphere on the base, he never totally bought into the military experience and so spent most of his free time off base and divided it between the local skating rink in Biloxi which was within easy walking distance and New Orleans, which was a cheap bus ride or free hitchhike away. There always seemed to be some airmen going there and coming back and they liked to fill their car with fellows who would share the gas expense. None of them had much money, so it caused them to find ways to share expenses, not a bad idea, actually.

When Jimmy first got to Biloxi, he only could skate straight ahead and with very limited variations. After a few weeks of skating there, he decided to improve his abilities. This would be necessary to advance his cause with the local girls and his ability to master more advanced skating skills.

To not be embarrassed before the people he saw each week, he went to a neighboring rink at Gulf Port to practice. He went there early in the morning and skated all day. After a tortuous day with many falls and bruises, he was able to skate backward and turn from forward to backward and back with some ability. This would advance his ability to coordinate his actions with the more advanced girl skaters.

This became the obvious thrust for his attentions when it became apparent that he was not going to make it as a speed skater, since though he was very fast in the straightaways, he could not compete with the smaller skaters in the corners. He also was not going to make it as a roller hockey member. He watched them in practice and decided that he was unprepared for the extent of the mayhem that they practiced. Besides, the local team was so good that they had actually scored a goal against the Grey Ghosts, so would have no room on the roster for a tyro like him.

So, Jimmy settled on skate dancing. He bought a pair of very fine skates for $140, which had roller bearings (for a smoother ride) and horsehide boots that fit like a glove. He would use these same skates as long as he skated.

The girls helped him to master the first three certificate level skills and started him on the ‘bar’ dances. He took to this like a duck to water. And it was so cool to actually be in demand by the girls. Even though they were not romantically interested also, in guys who would be here for a few months and then leave for ‘God knows where’ afterward, they needed partners to skate dance with. Since there were four girls who could skate dance to every guy who could, it was practically a guarantee of attention to the guys who could. Socially, this was one of the best decisions Jimmy ever made. Maybe the best!

CHARLOTTE

New Orleans was another matter. It was tuneful, raw and picturesque. He would go down on Friday evening and pay to ride the paddle wheeled stern-wheeler, The President, for the dance that occurred there for two hours while it was out in the river. The girls and women tended to be hauntingly beautiful and slim. They were also very friendly, but proper too. Jimmy was a terrible dancer, but none of them ever complained. Just worked at dancing within his limited abilities. It was all great fun.

The second time he went on the boat he met Charlotte, a southern belle, if there ever was one. Blonde, slim, nineteen and simply the most elegant female he had ever met. Jimmy immediately felt a very warm feeling about her and it slowly developed into deep friendship. She was not the kind of girl you would ever actually make advances to. But, even so she was very attentive to Jimmy and a dear soul to be with.

On the sixth time he was to meet her, he had rented a room near the wharf to stay overnight. When he got there, she was standing with a Marine Sergeant. This didn’t look good at all! Wasn’t sure he shouldn’t just turn and run for it. But, something in her eyes said that things would be OK. And he had never done any-thing remotely improper with her. So Jimmy approached and Charlotte introduced her companion as Sergeant Frank Muster. He could tell that he was ‘no nonsense’ even for a marine. The marine took his hand firmly, but not in an unfriendly manner. Didn’t try to impress Jimmy with his strength, either.

Then Charlotte left them together to face each other while she excused herself to go to the powder room. A very strategic maneuver. With her temporarily gone, the sergeant spoke up:

Sergeant—It is good to meet you, airman. Charlotte has told me a lot about you. (At this Jimmy gets nervous.) You have dated her several times while I was gone and taken very good care of her. She and “I” appreciate that. And she told me that she is quite fond of you. (Jimmy didn’t know what to make of this, so he merely stood in a respectful manner, with his mouth firmly closed.) I have bad news for you though, Jimmy. We have been dating for some time. And she and I have just become engaged to marry. It will be soon, we haven’t set a firm date yet. (Jimmy’s heart sank with this announcement and he must have shown at least some glimpse of it.) She and I have decided to invite you to join us tonight for the last time you will see her as we will be leaving the area. (Said firmly, but not unkindly.) You and I will dance her feet off tonight and leave her with a very pleasant memory of you as she and I start our lives together.

Jimmy didn’t even consider demurring. It occurred to him that Charlotte was more than a little in love with him, too. But, the sergeant was older, mature and it was easily seen that he was wildly in love with her. Jimmy could hardly blame him for that. No doubt about it, he grudgingly admitted that Frank was a better choice at the time. He just wasn’t ready to take the responsibility of such a fine young woman’s life. Evidently the sergeant was ready!

He shared a truly memorable evening with them, dancing in turns with her. She was so happy that night, dancing with her two favorite men.

When the boat docked, they walked down to the wharf and stopped. The sergeant walked off a few paces into the night mist and kindly turned his head away. Charlotte took him into her arms and gave him the only kiss that he ever received from her. She then hugged him tightly and whispered into his ear, “I am so very sorry, Jimmy! So sorry.” He whispered into her ear, “It’s OK, Charlotte. It’s OK.” She turned and took the sergeants hand as they walked away. He never saw either of them again. He slept alone that night in the hotel room that he had had such high hopes for.

THE RACE:

P.T. training continued from basic training for several weeks into the tech school regime. To graduate from P.T, the airman had to perform a series of tasks to a standard. Things like pushups, pull ups and running a measured mile were included. Jimmy was in the best shape of his life, but was built very slim and spare in the shoulders and arms. Most of his strength was in his thighs. He had been a cross country runner in high school and a roller-skater, since.

At the end of the P.T. test, he had not met the standard of any of the strength events, though he could do sit ups all day. When the sergeant asked them to line up for the mile run, he told the sergeant that it was no use since he had failed the other events. The sergeant consulted his clip board and told him that he had done respectfully in them, with an honest effort in each. The necessary time for the mile was 6 minutes. He was told that if he could beat that with a significantly better time, he would be passed anyway. That was all of the incentive that he needed. Not another 6 weeks of P.T.

During his stay at Keesler, Jimmy was pretty much a loner. He got along with the other guys pretty well, but was an unknown among them, since he spent so much time at the roller rinks and in New Orleans. The other guys just mostly ignored him. One guy though was very annoying, because of some jealously that Jimmy never understood.

He was from Michigan and had been a modestly successful runner there. Jimmy had only run cross-country and with very modest success. He had bounced back and forth between the varsity and the J.V’s. He placed high among the J.V. runners and in the middle of the varsity runners. James just made the varsity for state and placed a distant number forty on a relatively flat course.

He had trouble with going out too fast and then fading because he could maintain a pace, and increase it, but when he started to slow, it was soon over since he couldn’t pick up his speed again. If he could avoid that until he ‘hit the wall,’ he could run all day long.

Once in high school he was running a very flat course and was far ahead, when three runners passed him. He didn’t know that they were college runners out to give him a thrill. He thought that he was in forth when he crossed the finish line. Trouble was that it wasn’t the finish line. Everyone was trying to get him restarted and were pointing to the real finish line. Jimmy managed to get himself moving again and did actually finish fourth. This was what moved him up to the varsity for state.

The course for the P.T. final test was laid out on the airport taxiway. It involved a lap and a half around the chosen course. The group that he ran with was made up of sixty runners and included the Michigan airman. He had lightly taunted Jimmy about this run and had strongly affirmed that he would win. Jimmy just wanted to do well enough to pass out of P.T.

The runners ran in plain tennis shoes, tee shirts and shorts. When the runners lined up for the start, Jimmy reminded himself to start at a modest pace and not worry where he was placed during the beginning of the run.

The runners were sent on their way and a number of them ran out strong, including airman ‘Michigan.’ Jimmy started out a very modest pace and lagged towards the back of the very elongated pack. He was running very strongly and smoothly, though.

At the end of one third of the mile, which was one half of one lap around the course, Jimmy was near dead-last. However, he was running with a lot of confidence and comfort. He picked up his pace and started to pass the other runners. Because of the conditioning that he had gained during P.T. he was feeling very strong.

When he completed one lap of the course, which was two-thirds of a mile in distance, he found himself with only eight guys ahead of him. So he stepped up the pace again to a rate as high as he had ever run distances at. He was still running strongly and smoothly. This race wasn’t long enough to encounter ‘the wall.” So he was only concerned with running smoothly and maintaining his pace.

As he got to the one-sixth of a mile left-to-run point, he found himself with only ‘Michigan guy’ ahead. He was also running very strongly. Jimmy decided to put everything he had left to the finish, so he shot forward running as rapidly as he could. He passed ‘Michigan guy,’ and shot on to the finish line.

As he crossed the finish line, the other airmen waiting for their turns to run were jumping up and down and shouting encouragement to Jimmy and the other runners. As he finished he started to collapse, but others grabbed him and held him up to catch his breath and get his legs back. There was absolutely nothing left in his tank, ‘Michigan guy’ came across the finish line in second place, still running strongly, but stunned by Jimmy’s final dash. If he had known what was to happen, he might have been able to fend Jimmy off. Or maybe, not.

When Jimmy finally got his breath back, and his legs firmed up enough to walk, he made his way over to the sergeant to see what his time was. He needed a 5:30 or less to pass. The sergeant in an excited voice said that his time was 4:34. Jimmy was just stunned. It was close to the base record. Jimmy was just glad that it qualified him to pass from further P.T.

The other guys were very excited though. For it was the first personally identifiable thing that Jimmy had done. With a bunch of young men each tended to be identified with some easily remembered quirky thing they had done. This guy was known as the guy who ‘peed his pants on a long march’ or who had ‘passed the transistor unit exam with a perfect score.’ Things like that. So now Jimmy wasn’t a mystery anymore, or at least not as much of one. He was the guy who had run so fast.

The P.T. instructors were somewhat dubious about the time being so good, so they measured again the distance and found it to be 100 yards too long. So the time stood, and they adjusted it to 4:24 by subtracting a great time of :10 flat for the excess 100 yards. This time of 4:24 would have placed very high at state in his senior year of high school.

The only negative fallout from this accomplishment was a brief episode of jealousy by ‘Michigan guy’ who grabbed Jimmy’s ankles while Jimmy was sitting on the top bed of a bunk later that day and evidently tried to send Jimmy headfirst into the table below by pulling his legs back. Before Jimmy could say anything, others told him to stop it. It could have just been a stupid instinctive reaction on his part and not jealousy at all, but either way nothing else negative happened between them.

But for Jimmy, things ran ever so much better from then on, with something positive attached to his name. It even seemed to carry forward with the guys who were stationed with him in Alaska. It also helped to change Jimmy’s attitude towards himself.

FIRST LEAVE/FRIEDA:

When Jimmy got his first leave around Easter of his first year of service, he rode a bus all the way from Biloxi to Seattle, near his home town. The intimidatingly long ride got off to a propitious start when a group of college girls got on board at Gulfport only a couple of miles from Biloxi. They were going back to school after a weekend of fun on the gulf coast to Jackson. The bus was full up, so a pretty brunette asked to sit next to him in one of the few remaining open seats. Perhaps because he was wearing his uniform, she felt safer. He asked if she wanted the window seat, but she said no she would like the aisle one. It was getting dark and late in the evening, she was very tired and so asked if she could put her head on his shoulder to rest, as the seats were very cramped. He said that it was fine. So she did and slept all the way to where she got off in Jackson. His arm and shoulder were dead from the pressure of her head, but his heart was happy. He never did learn her name.

At the halfway point, Jimmy stopped to spend a few days in Minneapolis with the family of a young girl that he had met over the backyard fence of his parent’s while he was shooting baskets at the basket mounted there. The young lady, whom he didn’t know at the time, would throw back his misses. He spent a pleasant week there and then resumed his trip home on the bus. He thought he would never escape Montana. All that barbwire, fence posts and cattle. The state is very wide and there is not much else to see there until you get to the western end, which is very pretty.

Then Jimmy arrived home to a very enthusiastic welcome. The family met him at the bus station and drove him home. He sank back into the warmth of his family. The family was much amused by his newly acquired southern accent. They were much interested in his experiences. Jimmy said nothing about the lost Charlotte, though.

On Tuesday of the week of his arrival, Jimmy went shopping at the mega-store with his dad for some groceries and saw a number of familiar faces including some of his former fellow workers. His boss greeted him, asked him how he was and inquired as to when he would be coming back to work (with a warm smile.) He also informed Jimmy that he had first dibs on him when he got out to make up for his sudden departure (said with a mild chiding.)

As he and his dad turned a corner on an aisle, suddenly Frieda came into view. She smiled and purposely moved up to great him. Dad withdrew to the next aisle to give them some privacy.

Frieda—–Nice to see you, Benson!

Jimmy—–Good to see you too, Frieda.

Frieda—–How are things going for you in the Air Force?

Jimmy—–Actually quite well. I am in tech school learning to be an electronics technician. How about you?

Frieda—–Sounds good, Jimmy. Bet you are at the top of your class, too. I am near the end of my freshman year at Stanford and doing well.

Jimmy—–Not the top. We have some amazingly bright guys. But, I am well up on the list. And I would be very surprised Frieda if you don’t do excellently.

Frieda—–Me too! (She said with a smile, but not one iota of false modesty.) How long are you going to be in town?

Jimmy—–A little over a week more. Say Frieda, we have never done anything together. Would you like to catch a burger and a movie on Friday evening? You can choose the movie, too.

Frieda—–Sounds like fun. Pick me up at my home, so my dad can run his date/rabies exam on you. I’ll write down my address here……See ya about six?

Jimmy—–Wouldn’t miss it for the world. See you then Frieda!

Frieda—–Check.

In the meantime he heard nothing from Jeannie or Sheila. This was curious to him since they both would have known he was in town. And Sheila had written several letters to him including the one with the ‘photos.’ He could have called, but he just couldn’t get himself to do it. Couldn’t imagine why either. And nobody in the family mentioned either of them, either. Sort of curious, he thought.

On Friday he arrived at Frieda’s to pick her up. Unfortunately, he had gotten a cold in the meantime and with it, the worst case of laryngitis of his life. Jimmy couldn’t speak A WORD! NOT ONE! This caused a considerable amount of mirth on the part of Frieda and her parents. They mercifully invited him to spend the evening with them instead of going out. They also gave him a note pad to write brief comments on and ordered pizza and root beer. Her family was modestly affluent and let Frieda and Jimmy have some time together in the basement TV room. The TV was very big and had a wonderful sound system. They found an appropriate movie with ‘few commercial interruptions’ at least it was advertised as such. It had significantly fewer ones, and they tended to be grouped together at actual reasonable places in the movie. The pizza was great and the root beer was a continuation of a lifetime love affair. In his whole life, Jimmy only found one root beer, a store brand, to be undrinkable. He especially liked IBC, Thomas Kemper and Mug root beers, but Henry Weinharts was considered by him to be the best.

They settled in to watch the movie, with little to say, but comfortably cuddled. Jimmy was surprised at how chastely affectionate she was with him. She seemed to genuinely enjoy his company. And as previously mentioned, she was striking in appearance. Those that knew her at all, seemed to forget that, since it was lost in the impressions of her transcendent intelligence. There are smart people. There are highly intelligent people. Then there is Frieda! And here Fabulous Frieda was curled up with him on the couch. What a wonder!

Nothing progressed beyond a series of cuddles and a few warm hearted pecks. He was very glad of that. It was more than enough for now. And made for a very pleasant evening. He wondered if his silence enhanced the experience for her or detracted from it. Probably improved it, for as intelligent as Jimmy was, he wasn’t near the level of Frieda. But, she didn’t seem to be looking for that anyway. She seemed to be more than pleased to simply have a nice quiet affectionate evening with him. And he very much enjoyed it, too.

When the evening came to a close, her parents were very warm in their thanking him for coming over. Frieda gave him a hearty kiss of goodbye, right in front of them, and he left with a smile that gave them pause to smile again broadly on their own part. What a wonderful evening!

A couple of days later, it was time to return to duty. There was a National Guard flight center at the county airport, so he hitched a ride on a flying boxcar going to Fort Campbell, Kentucky. This two-engine freighter was noisy and drafty. And as they found out over Idaho, flew very poorly on one engine. The pilot managed to nurse it to Boise, and Jimmy spent a day and a half there until he could get another ride. He called ahead to Keesler that he might be a little late, but under the circumstances they were quite understanding. Turned out he made it back on time anyway since he caught a bus from Fort Campbell to Biloxi that worked out very well.

HORROR AND AGONY:

When he got back, it was Sunday night and dark. He had to get things in order since he was due in class the next morning. As he was putting his things away, he noticed a letter laying on his bed. He had left Biloxi, Miss. with strong impressions of the South. He was impressed with the music, blues and Cajun, especially. The willowy, sensible and dignified women made a lasting impression. But, the racial divisions there, with the whites in control, and the lack of respect from and towards both sides was unsettling. He had had little contact with this kind of behavior as a youth and the school studies that touched on it glossed over the reality of its hurt. There were not enough rooms for every guy to be in a separate room. There was a communal bunk room for the guys when they first got there. Then they would be assigned a two man room for the duration. About the food there, it was terrific. They had a great cook in a staff sergeant and his young airman helper. Not only was the food great, but the cooks used an absolute minimum number of pans to prepare it. Great to the washers. After several months the sergeant told the airman, that he could not teach him anymore about cooking. The young airman was so good, that the guys encouraged him to go to chef’s school after he got out. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to, though. James—–Glad you enjoyed it.

FIRMLY ON COURSE:

After this, James set his course firmly on his education. He had already been pursuing it fervently. But now, fueled in part by his lover’s guilt his mind became firmly focused on his studies. He still indulged in his feminine interests, but never again did they gain ascendancy in his life. Until the next time, that is.

At his Junior College he had a very fine group of professors. Since at the J.C. they were not required to publish or somehow in another way distinguish themselves outside of the classroom, they could ‘amazingly,’ concentrate on teaching and leading the students on their educational way. The ones he met were very proficient in this. His high school English teacher would be very happy to know that her preparations of us were not being wasted.

There seems to be among some the attitude that a J.C. education is somehow of a lessor quality than one given at a four-year school. Interestingly, a study done by an independent agency actually found out that those J.C. students who went on to a four year school actually did better in their studies than the students who attended the four year school all four years. They pointed out that the level of instruction at the J.C’s was very high. And that the level of dedication by the students who attended and excelled there was also high. To be fair, the four year schools tended to get the best of the J.C. students which quite possibly skewed the results somehow. But, whatever, it showed that doing your first two years at a J.C. was no handicap at all to the total educational experience.

Of course our school (J.C.) had a number of students who had been educated by a particular group of excellent high school teachers. That undoubtedly skewed the results, also.

At college, he was very impressed by Mrs. Mansfield, the finest Math teacher he had ever encountered. And James had had a number of fine ones throughout his schooling. Among the things that made her special, was that she made the students feel smart versus glorifying herself. In her class he continued his usual pattern of doing every math problem in the book as they progressed through, not just the assigned ones with answers provided in the study book. Interestingly, these unanswered ones tended to be the ones in the tests. So James was well prepared for each test. And he got very high scores. In talking with him during and out of class, she came to recognize that he wasn’t a Mozart of Math, but sort of a Beethoven. James was reasonably intelligent, but he gained his success mostly on very hard work, instead of some amount of genius. Mrs. M. in respect of that decided to reward his hard work with more hard work, using him to tutor the struggling students who were also in the same class. And of course, his already high scores soared. Nothing teaches you like teaching others.

He reserved his hardest efforts for his core classes in Math and Science. But, he found that other classes caught his imagination and enjoyment, also. He had taken a Music Appreciation course since it helped with his Arts requirement and seemed to require little effort on his part. However, the professor was very good and interested in his subject. So they learned the various Ages of the com-posers and the main ones of those years, the various forms of music that they produced, to identify some of their compositions and with real fun the ability to identify the various instruments of the orchestra from their sound alone. This turned out to be a lot more satisfying than he anticipated.

Also, he took a course on history covering mainly Middle Ages Europe from Charlemagne to about 1800. The professor was a rotund black Baptist, who was really into his subject. There were NO boring days in his class. He was very fair in his handling of the religious issues of that time period. His lectures were lively and mesmerizing. And he graded fairly, too. Very cool class and man.

MARY, ET AL:

During the semester break, James returned to the home rink in his city. No sign of Amy. Why should there be? Probably hurt her feelings very badly. Felt some pronounced twinges over that.

But, the first night he met a young woman Mary, who was interesting to talk to, but didn’t throw herself at him. He was intrigued by that. She was a little taller than average, dark haired, round faced and HWP in build with just a little extra. She had a ready smile and intelligent eyes. He liked her very much right off. After a couple of meetings at the rink, she asked him to take her home. They parked and by mutual consent things got out of hand. While she enjoyed the intimacies, he could tell that she was feeling no little guilt over it. Probably from a religious upbringing. They saw each other another time, with the same results. The next time he went to her house and her mom came to the door and told him that Mary didn’t want to see him anymore. That really took the wind out of his sails. He walked to the street end of the walkway, sat on the steps next to the street and just soaked up the sadness for a while. After a bit, he got into his car and drove away to never see Mary again. It’s too bad, and his fault too, she was a really sweet girl.

Since James started with the winter quarter, he went to class through summer to catch up. Summer classes are slightly shorter and condensed and a good time to get requirements out of the core group out of the way. It was when he took the Music Appreciation course. Since he felt stymied romantically after Mary, he worked more hours to take the pressure off in the fall. He skated regularly, met girls and got laid a couple of times, too. It was fun, but not memorable. Even though the girls enjoyed James, neither they nor James were interested in any repeats. Once was enough.

One young blond did take it seriously. They made love in the back seat of his car at the drive-in theater, with both climaxing, but no penetration. Just like with Ramona. No serious repercussions, except a small dark cloud over the female assistant manager’s head. She was never all that friendly after this.

When fall quarter began, he had a near miss at losing his way in college. He was taking French and the professor had complimented him on his pronunciation, which led him to the expectation of getting an A in the class. James was becoming fanatical about his grades. They were great, but he was determined to get straight A’s in order to be able to attend the ‘university of his choice.’ He really didn’t have anything to worry about in this regard, since the University was obligated to accept him with his grades anyway. But, James was prone to choking up at imaginary problems where none existed.

When the mid quarter grades came in, he had a solid B in French. He was so stunned and upset that he went to the admissions office and started the process to quit school. Everyone in the school was upset by this. That night his mom took him into her arms, hugged him like she did when he was a little boy and told him that whatever he did would be OK. The next morning he terminated the withdrawal and humbly went back to his classes.

He only did light dating the rest of the year, because his work at the store and his studies. He got real familiar with Playboy and other men’s magazines and kept a good supply of lube. Wasn’t anywhere as satisfying as being with a girl, but it got him through it.

SUE, AGAIN:

During the winter break, he happened to wander by a community non-religious winter public contributed hot and cold dish dinner. Despite what anyone might think negatively, you probably get the best food of your life at these kinds of meals religious or not. The ladies take their offerings very seriously. No world championship chess match could equal the tensions in their kitchens as they prepare their specialties for the guys to eat and for the other gals to evaluate. Year-long reputations hang in the balance here.

It just so happened that Sue was there. She noticed him as he wandered by and invited him to sit and talk with her. James felt no concern about it and so said to himself, “Why not!”

Sue——–(In quiet and respectful tones,) It is good to see you, James. It has been a long time since we have talked.

James—–Yes, it has. How are you?

Sue——–Oh, I am fine. I have a job downtown in an insurance office. I am working as the receptionist with the understanding that I will be trained to eventually be an agent. It is moving slowly, but is moving forward. How about you?

James—–Well, I finished my years with the Air Force and am in J.C. here. Things are going well.

Sue——–Yes, I heard. Also heard that Sheila really popped the cork out of the bottle for you. You have quite a ladies’ man reputation around here. Interestingly, no one seems to hold it against you. Not even the girls you have left behind. I guess I missed out on something, huh?

James—– (Blushing) Oh, I’m not that much of a player. But, I have met some nice people along the way.

Sue——–Yeah, so I have heard, (said kindly.) And James, I am so sorry about Sheila. That was a horrid thing to happen to her………….and to you, too.

James—–(With a slightly choked voice,) Thank you, Sue. I still haven’t completely come to grips with it.

Sue——–James, if you have the heart I always thought you had, you never will. The first one is so very precious no matter what else happens between the two of them. It should have been me, James. My fault, My Loss!

James—–Sue, don’t be so hard on yourself. You were a great pal and date for all of those years. I am not bitter about it. I have such pleasant memories of those times. And I laugh at myself when I remember all of the times I wanted you so much, when you held out.

Sue——–Yes, I knew. A girl always does.

James—–Well Sue, even though you held out, you were very kind about it and always made up for it in some way, that I respected your stand on it.

Sue——–I really cared about you, James. Even when I became mesmerized by Bob, it was still you that I loved. I still saw me as being with you the rest of my life. It was all my fault that it didn’t happen. I was so cruel to you at the PROM.

James—–It wasn’t all your fault, Sue. (James said being generous.)

Sue——–Well, James. That is very kind of you to say. But, I know in my heart what really happened.

James—–How are you doing relationship wise now, then?

Sue——–I have dated some. I had abandoned Bob before his death. And really nothing had happened between us, at least nothing ‘permanent’ if you understand what I mean.

James—–Good, Sue, save it for a great guy when you marry. I hope I will be welcome to attend. You are a great gal, Sue.

Sue——–(After shaking off a couple of tears,) Are you sure you don’t want to work towards having a starring role at that wedding? (She said with a twinkle in her eye.)

James—–At one time I wanted nothing else, Sue. But, time and events have sort of passed us by. I have goals that I am pursuing that will take time and keep me busy for many years. I will probably wait for many years before I could honestly give myself to any gal in marriage. And marriage is the only thing that would work for you. I almost feel jealous of the guy who gets you and shares his life with you.

Sue——–Almost jealous?

James—–Yes Sue. There is no way that you would be able to wait that long. Just let me know when, and if I can I will be there to support you.

Sue——–Thank you for that James. Whether you can make it or not, I know your heart will be with me.

James—–Yes, it will. Well Sue, I will be moving on, now. Good to see you.

Sue——–Yes, and thank you for taking some time to talk with me. It really helps.

James—–Yes it does. (As he walks away)

TO THE ‘U’:

The rest of the school year was very busy with classes, skating and work at the store. There were some cool experiences with girls along the way. The young girls were just totally amazed that a guy would go down on them. And they were ‘converted,’ as it were, after they had enjoyed that experience even just once. It made them feel so much more appreciated and not just used, and it helped them to climax, too. Which they so much enjoyed. More than one girl thanked him for introducing them to this. In June, he graduated near the top of his class with an Associate’s degree in Math and Science and was immediately accepted into the Meteorology program at the university.

During his small amount of spare time that summer, he hung out at the ‘U’ in order to familiarize himself with the physical layout and to get to know some of the students he would be working with. They thought that this was cool and he was invited to several frat parties. Evidently, his student accomplishments had preceded him, because he was getting a lot of attention and respect before he was even officially enrolled at the ‘U.’ The girls seemed to be aware of his other reputation, also. Must have been from some of the girls that knew him at J.C. and preceded him to the ‘U.’ As to his scholarships, it was probably other sources that had paved the way. There seemed to be no discrimination aimed at him for doing his first two years at J.C. Some of his fellow students invited him to be part of their study groups and several girls indicated more carnal interest for when he officially got there.

He planned to and did work all of the hours he could at the store that summer, including all the holiday time and overtime he could get. He saved most all of the money he earned. With that money, scholarships, his G.I.Bill support and some support from his family, he would not have to work while at the ‘U.’ This was good, since he planned to continue with his ‘full-court press’ on his studies during these last two years. He would be starting immediately with very advanced Math, Meteorology and Physical Science classes. They would demand his utmost attention and effort. Also, he planned to enter Air Force R.O.T.C. at the ‘U’ so that he would qualify to be an officer when he graduated and perhaps qualify to learn to fly. There seemed to be no problem in the way, except for his nose bleeds. And they had pretty much disappeared when he left the very hot climates. Also, in the summers, he wanted to be available to take an intern position at the local weather department to get some first-hand experience with what he was studying. The only hang-ups that he could envision would be how to balance meteorology intern placing and his summer Air Force commitments.

However, the Air Force Commander for R.O.T.C. at the ‘U’ said that that could be accommodated, perhaps by his taking his intern position with the military at the nearby Air Force base. That would work out fine, he thought.

LISA:

One of the girls seemed to be like-minded. She noticed him across the room and moved over to engage him in conversation, that promised by its looks to be a lot more interesting than what they saw happening before them.

Lisa———Hello, my name is Lisa.

James—–I am James, good to meet you.

Lisa——–A young man with manners! Have I died and gone to heaven?

James—–Not by the scene that is playing out before us, I don’t think so.

Lisa——–And, a sense of humor, too. This could be interesting. What is your situation here at the ‘U?’ I don’t recognize you.

James—–I am a transfer from J.C. I will be starting my junior year this fall. I am a Meteorology major.

Lisa——–That’s interesting. We don’t get many of those around here. And don’t expect any back-lash about your coming from J.C. J.C. ‘learner’s permit’ and all. All but some butthead seniors know better. Can I make some recommendations for you?

James—–Sure, I would appreciate that.

Lisa——–Good! A good attitude, too. Do you have any outstanding weaknesses I should know about first?

James—–(He smiled and said,) Yes I like the ladies!

Lisa——–And honesty too. You are the one we heard about. Lady killer, but very popular with the ladies anyway. Well, that will have to cease here. You won’t have time for that and you won’t need to make any enemies here, if you want to excel here.

James—–(He continued to smile,) You mean that I will have to give up sex, here?

Lisa——–(She smirked,) No not that. Almost everyone, especially the gals take their sex very seriously here. You better bring your ‘A’ game. But, indiscriminate sex here is counter-productive. Most of the high achievers choose appropriate partners to live and fuck with. Oh, don’t worry, few of them end up in permanent relationships after graduation. It is just a way to take care of their sex needs, work together and support each other. Sort of like a temporary marriage. It is good to choose someone you might share classes with or at least are in the same general area that you are in. Since you are in one of the hard sciences, you should seek someone else in that department, too.

One thing that is an inside secret is that the departments tend to have their important exams on the same day. And one of the truly important preparations for them is a good morning fuck before testing. Another after having success isn’t bad either, she murmured. It won’t allow you to seek someone for those times. You just won’t have the time for that. So, having a partner handy is very practical.

Science says that it helps to reduce the stress level in anticipating the exams, so that your studying efforts can be drawn upon better. Of course, even though we are going to be scientists, too; it doesn’t make us swallow everything that they present as fact do we? (He smiles and nods.) But, in this case it certainly feeds our desire for and justification of this need being met. By the way, I am an astronomy major. So, I am a prime candidate to pair up with you. We will have a number of subjects in common. I adore sex and will also spend a lot of my time looking up at the sky. (Said suggestively!)

James—–WOW, thank you for all of that. Great advice. And I will certainly consider your recommendations. All of them!

Lisa——–No pre-trials, though. You don’t get this pussy, until you are enrolled and begin classes. I would be happy to show you around for the first couple of days, though, whether we pair up or not. And I can come up with some other candidates if I won’t do. I sure like your ‘bod’ though.

James nodded and then began to take notice of her looks. She realized this, of course, but allowed it anyway. He noticed that she was of medium height, about 5’5”, was height/weight proportionate, plus a little. She had a bounteous breast works, and looked very sturdy. She had medium long dark hair. She smiled a lot and at least talked very straight and intelligently. He doubted that he would find anyone better as his living, study and sex partner. He would reserve judgment, but she looked like an excellent candidate……

James—–I will think things over. But, I am very impressed by you.

Lisa——–Fair enough, James.

With that he got her phone number and she got his. They promised to stay in touch and let each other know if anything would change in their plans.

James left the party soon after. He didn’t plan to spend much time at parties. He was here to learn and advance his plans. He didn’t need to have a M.I.P. party in attendance on his records, either. His record was pristine clear and wanted to keep it that way.

James worked very hard that summer at the store, over 56 hours some weeks. Sometimes it seemed that he only ate and slept. Even his family barely knew he was there. No complaints, though. They each knew very well what his plans were and were totally dedicated to helping him achieve his goals. He got a letter that summer from the Air Force, telling him how much they were excited about him moving into the R.O.T.C. program, after a stellar career (their words, not his and never used by them during any of his promotion interviews, either) as an electronics technician. They stated that they were happy to welcome him back into the Air Force family. (Funny that they never used that term when he was enlisted.) And that they would give due consideration to his desire to be a Mete-orology officer and a pilot. All that meant was that they would look at his qualifications and try to wedge him into some place in the service that would work for them. Fair enough. And it was likely that things would work out anyway.

James still kept an arm’s length from the girls at the store. Several of them during the summer let him know that they were available to him. But, his plans were firm now and as nice as some of them were, they didn’t fit into his plans. There was some disappointment on their parts over this. A nice young man (their words, not his) with a future was pretty high up on their wish list. His reputation as a Lothario did not hurt him at all. They seemed to be of the opinion that he was well broken-in and at least would be fun in the sack. They seemed to want to give this a preliminary try. But, he remained focused with an iron determination. He knew that such fine girls would find their own private ‘dick,’ someday. And the guy better know what he was doing and store up some energy beforehand.

SUE, AGAIN, AGAIN:

On one of his few days off, he happened to be on a non-vital errand for his mom down-town when he encountered Sue again. She invited him to have lunch with her ‘Dutch-treat.’ And he again saw no reason to deny her that. They seemed to be settling into a friendship that could last. Nothing more, of course. But, a friendship is a friendship and not to be sniffed at. As they settled down, she began the conversation:

Sue——–Thank you for joining me.

James—– You are welcome, Sue. Actually I enjoyed our last conversation and am curious where it will lead this time.

Sue——–Probably not to bed, I guess. Darn it!

James—–No, I am sorry. Oh, a sense of humor. That is so cool, Sue. Something new, huh?

Sue——–Oh, I think that it was always there. You just didn’t seem to notice. You were so tense most of the time we were together and shall I say, expectant?

James—–Yes, I think that that describes it exactly.

Sue——–You did miss one chance to get your dream, though.

James—–You mean the night I heard the raps on my window and didn’t answer.

Sue——–Exactly.

James—–Oh dear. You know, Sue, that that is truly good, though. It means you will still be a virgin when you marry, as you have always wanted. At least I have made no contribution to you losing it.

Sue——–No, it is still intact. But, I thought that with your previous desires for me,…. They are previous aren’t they? (James just smiles warmly.) And with your considerable experiences and reputation since, you would look down on that condition of mine.

James—–Not at all, Sue. It is you and your desires for yourself that are important. We each have our own path. Mine came as quite a surprise to me. But, I am accommodated to it now. Your path is yours. And I honor you for following it faithfully. I truly hope to be there to honor you when you get married. And to tell the guy what a lucky stiff he is with great enthusiasm. He will know when you share your wedding night that he is the first. And he will honor you for that. And feel very good about himself.

Sue——–But, aren’t I missing something in the meantime?

James—–(With a little white-lie) No you aren’t. It will still be damn good when you start. And you will have the rest of your life to enjoy it. Be true to yourself, Sue. And you will feel better about yourself and enjoy it even more. (Well, that wasn’t all a lie, after all.)

Sue——–James, thank you so much for the encouragement. It means a lot to me. None of what we have shared will ever leave my heart.

James—–Nor mine, Sue! (This he truly meant.)

Sue——–Well, let’s finish out lunch and I will let you go and finish your errands.

James—–Actually, mom’s errands. (He said with a crooked smile.)

Sue——–Yeah, OK. I always liked your mom.

James—–She is great, no doubt.

They parted feeling the best about each other that they ever had. A little sad, because it wouldn’t lead anywhere, but confident that they would always be friends. She knew if she ever had a son, she would name him James, at least as a middle name, if she couldn’t get away with it as a first.

FIRST YEAR AT THE ‘DUB’:

His mom talked him into going to a beach party with the young people from her church. She backed out at the last minute, his dad wasn’t interested either. So he took his siblings and went to it. They were a very well-mannered bunch of young people. A lot of fun, too. Since he was an eligible bachelor he attracted a lot of attention from the young ladies. He was remembered from his youth when he had been very dedicated to the faith. His beliefs were still strong, but he was walking a different path for now. Several of the girls were virtually stacked up like cordwood around his feet vying for his attentions. One very attractive young lady held back. She freely engaged him in conversation, but refused to make a show of herself. James could tell that she was not to be trifled with. So he held back from pursuing her, out of respect for her evident good heart and Christian demeanor of the best type. He never got her name, but could in another life have imagined a happy one with her.

The rest of the summer played out, with work and sleep and a lot more work and little else. The time was rapidly approaching for him to leave for the ‘U.’ He had saved up a considerable funds for the year, with a promise of work again the next summer if he wanted it. With all that he had planned that didn’t seem possible. But, the offer was there and it was firm. As a parting gift for him leaving for school, his dad paid off the Camaro. He apologized that he wouldn’t be able to do much more, but James assured him that it would help a lot with that payment removed from his budget.

He let Lisa know that he was on the way, and she said that she was already there and would meet up with him as soon as he arrived. He let her know that he had thought it out carefully, and if she was still interested he would be happy to pair up with her for the rest of the years in school. She indicated no small amount of enthusiasm with that prospect, and said that it would be great. By-The-Way, Lisa was a very highly rated student also. And one of the guys at the party told him that she was a tornado in bed. That promised to be a real challenge (for a meteorology major,) he imagined.

James got off to a very good start at the ‘U.’ Between his by now renowned work ethic (spurred by a very challenging High School English teacher) the first two years of excellent preparation at J.C, his prodigious curiosity and interest in virtually everything and his assistance in fitting in by Lisa, things started off and went well. James and Lisa got a dorm room together. No one else was allowed in it. They had no interest in the party scene at the ‘U.’ though they did attend some once in a while. They were both totally dedicated to reaching their goals. Mutually supporting and critical, they each spurred the other to achieve their best.

Contrary to what James expected, it didn’t turn out to be a sexual smorgasbord with Lisa. They did make love rather regularly. It just was mostly friendly sex that kept them calm and satisfied, sort of like if they were really married. It did get real hot though, when they were destressing on mornings before important exams, like.

Lisa——-Are you ready for today?

James—–Are You? I have three midterms today. I am feeling a bit stressed.

Lisa——–Yep, except for the last minute preparations, of which you are a key ingredient.

James—–Well, we did our other preps over the last two days. The study group really helped. I feel that I know the subjects very well. If I can only overcome the stress and focus, I feel very confident.

Lisa——–Let’s see what we can do for each other on that!

[With that she marched across the room, threw him over her shoulder and carried him to the bed. Ordered him to remove his clothes.]

James—–My God, Lisa. I didn’t know you were that strong! (He said as he hurried to remove his clothing.)

Lisa——–I am a farm girl, James. I lifted and carried hay bales that weigh more than you. (As she laughed) Was worth it to see the expression on your face, too. Now get ready for some serious fucking. You asked for destressing and you’re going to get it. (This all said as she was shucking herself.)

In the morning all of them threw off their remaining clothes and jumped into the chilly water to have a combination cleansing and water party. Before the party could advance to another ‘play time,’ however common sense and cold privates caused them to return to the boat, warm-up and get dressed.

With the return to school, it was a return to the last dash of classes and exams to finish the year and their respective degrees. They didn’t even have time for a finals fuck for each exam, each time. Sometimes but not all. They finished the year in great style and proceeded to move along with their lives. Lisa was going to return to the farm for the summer and start work for her masters. Her ‘boy’ promised that he would be patient until she finished her degrees. Probably, up through her PHD in Astronomy. She let James know that she would be taking care of ‘the boy’ in the meantime. James shared with her that that would probably help his patience immeasurably.
