“One other thing,” James’ tone turned more serious. “Ash raised a decent question… and I didn’t know how to answer it. How exactly am I supposed to destroy the idol, Lilith?”

“You think so?” James asked, not really believing her.

She wouldn’t do that unless it was worth protecting, and I doubt she cares that much about me or this Temple. Destroying the statue will destroy Ishtar; that’s what I believe.”
“And if it destroys us along with her?” James asked, his misgivings not entirely allayed.
“We accepted that risk when we went down this path, my love. We’re taking a gamble, but the same part of me that believes in you also believes that this will work and that we’ll survive. That’s good enough for me.”

“Even if that’s the case,” James said, “I still want to be prepared for anything. We know how dangerous Ishtar is.”
Lilith nodded and looked away, a mournful look in her eyes. “Yes,” she said. “Yes we do.”
James regretted his words when he saw Lilith’s reaction. He hadn’t meant to bring up painful memories. “Lilith…” James spoke, “I’m sorry, I didn’t –”
“It’s okay, James,” the raven-haired woman cut him off. She wiped away a tear. “I can talk about Sumis. Four thousand years should be enough time to move on, right?” She feigned a smile, but her sorrow was evident.
“You loved him.” It wasn’t a question.
Lilith was surprised by the blunt statement – and though she didn’t say anything immediately, her face told James he’d guessed right. “He cared about you too though, Lilith,” James said. “I could see it – and feel it – in the way he looked at you and talked to you. You meant the world to him; I know it.”

They were silent for a while before Lilith spoke again.
“I blamed him for a long time,” she said quietly, ashamed to speak the words aloud. James looked at her curiously. “I blamed Sumis for what happened to me,” Lilith elaborated. “He had the idol brought to the temple so that he could study it, and he told me never to touch it or go near it without him around. After I was trapped here, I blamed him for bringing that damn statue into my life. But it wasn’t his fault… I think it was just easier to hate him than it was to miss him.”
“Why did Sumis want to study the idol?” asked James.
Lilith wiped away her tears before responding. “For his research, I assume. He was seeking immortality.” James raised an eyebrow at this. “Not for himself,” Lilith clarified. “Sumis wasn’t so vain. He wanted to immortalize his magic so that it could protect his city and the people he loved even after he was gone. He never got the chance to finish that research, though…” Lilith’s dour mood sank lower. James put an arm around the demoness’ shoulders and gave her a loving squeeze. She looked at him gratefully and spoke again.
“I blamed myself for what happened too,” she said. “I was such a stupid girl, meddling in magic way beyond my level. My master died because of my stupidity and weakness. At least, that’s how I looked at it for a long time. But it wasn’t my fault any more than it was his. It’s Ishtar’s.” She spat the name, her voice full of loathing. “I hate her, James. I didn’t realize how much I hated her until I met you. I’d become so accustomed to my pitiful life as her slave that I’d forgotten what it meant to be in love, and what it meant to have that love threatened.”

More than the entire world, I love you,” she spoke. “And I will not let Ishtar stop me from loving you. We’ll beat her.”

Putting down her fork, Ashley regarded her brother with open concern. “Are you worried?”
James nodded and looked down in thought. “Lilith has faith that I can destroy the idol, but I’m not so sure. How am I going to succeed where someone like Sumis failed?” Ash reached across the table and placed a comforting hand over her brother’s.
“You’ll figure it out. You always do, don’t you?” She smiled warmly.
But James just shook his head and pulled his hand away. “You sound like Lilith… I’m glad you two think so highly of me, but it’ll take more than improvisation to beat Ishtar. What I really need is time – time to hone my magic and time to gather energy. But time is what we don’t have.”
“James…” Ash began, not sure what to say to reassure him. James stood and carried his plate to the sink.
“I’m fine. You’re right; I’ll figure something out.” He gave his sister a light smile, attempting to convey confidence he did not possess. She frowned, seeing right through him. “I’ve gotta get going,” he lied. “Let me know if you learn anything useful at the museum. I’ll see you later.” With that, he was out the door.
A few minutes later, James sat in his car outside the hotel, unsure of what to do next. He had class in about an hour but going to school seemed like a waste of time, all things considered. Was there any reason to sit in a classroom when he could be preparing for the inevitable museum heist? Speech class wasn’t going to teach him how to destroy an ancient magical artifact.”
