5 Days in The Adirondacks with my Niece

Did I think about fucking her before the trip began, Yes.

Two days before we were to leave I checked out the contents of what she was planning on bringing. More than half of it went onto the “don’t need pile” I did all I could to reduce the contents of her back back and finally got it down under 20lbs. Making sure she had the necessities and nothing extra we haggled over a few items deemed essential. I showed her how to pack everything in so the weight was distributed and would increase her stability as we hiked uneven terrain.

We each carried our own sleeping bag, air mattress, water, trail snacks and three layers of clothing & rain gear. I carried the tent, food, water purifier, stove, first aid & fuel. Over the years I have collected the lightest weight gear that still provides protection from the elements and a modicum of comfort for long treks in the backwoods.Finally after about 30 minutes of double checking our supplies we locked the car and stepped into the wilderness.

Ash looked like an advertisement for an outdoor expedition catalog. The tent, a solid free standing ultralight that had two doors and vestibules to store gear in, one on each side. The two doors are a nice feature that allows each person to enter and exit without having to climb over your tent mate. Once the tent was set up I tossed our sleeping pads and bags inside, then gathered some stones and made a fire ring about 10 feet from the front of the tent. We had a nice small fire going in a few minutes. I told Ash we had to inflate the air mattress and then slide them into the sleeve on the bottom of the sleeping bags while I cooked up dinner. Ash asked me “Which one is yours? They both look alike.” I told her they were matching bags but didn’t tell her that could be used separately or zipped together.

While cooking I broke out a flask of 18 year old scotch. I mixed it with a tiny splash of water and asked Ash if she wanted a taste.
“Almost as old as you.” I joked.
“Yech, that is nasty!” she exclaimed, but she took another big sip to confirm her opinion… I prefer this she said as she produced a packet of pot and asked if I wanted to take a hit. It had been years since I smoked and debated whether or not to join in.
One hit and I was stoned; a second and I wondered why I ever stopped.
Dinner was done and the stars were coming out as I cleaned up and stoked the fire. I could see the flames of the fire reflect in her eyes.

She just laughed, and said “that’s for you to find out”. Silence ensued for the next few minutes until I changed the topic to what to expect tomorrow. When Ash said she was tired and ready to sleep. She got up kissed me on the cheek and headed into the tent.
