G.S.P. Chapter 1/13 Prisoner Inside the Hospital

Prologue

The hot humid air was very still as two persons carefully stalked through the night of Prospect Park. In the darkness only a keen observer could see that they were both females. Far away the sound of cars could be heard from the streets of Brooklyn, but they were busy listening for other kinds of sounds. After a silent moment the taller of them, equipped with a camera, cleared her voice.

“Boss, it is completely quiet. Let’s go home, the monster isn’t here,” she said with a troubled voice. Her voice started loud but was fast reduced to a whisper when she noticed how far the sound carried.

“Quit the nonsense,” the other woman replied. “We need these kinds of scoops to make ourselves a name. No other reporter dares to enter Prospect Park since it is a restricted area. This is our big chance.”

“That is since they have seen the victims. No sane person would want to come near such violent creatures,” the camerawoman mumbled in reply.

“Stop worrying, we will just run if the monster gets here. Check if we have contact with the van. Can we broadcast directly to the news station?” She got an affirmative nod from the unhappy camerawoman.

“This is Judy Trott here, reporting live from inside the restricted area of Prospect Park in Brooklyn,” Judy said.

“The public deserves to know and thus we have secretly entered the area to find the truth. We have not found anything yet and will thus in the meantime give a short recollection of the current situation. The crisis started two hours ago when aliens, by the government classification named type B, suddenly attacked a gas station on Brooklyn. The number of the dead and injured in the first minutes has been estimated to around sixteen but the way they were slaughtered will require an autopsy to give an exact count,” Judy said, her voice rising into a crescendo.

“The origin of these aliens has not been verified even though dozens of volunteers watch the sky day and night. The number of discovered suspected UFOs is exceptional but no clear identification has been possible even though this is the seventh attack in a row. In earlier attacks the military has held the creatures at bay with great losses until superheroes like Ultra Wave or The Red Hawk have arrived from other parts of the country to deal with them. This time our hope goes to the city’s new superhero group, the G.S.P.”

Judy pretended that she was watching the heroes in distance. In truth it far too dark for her to see anything.

“The group’s full name is Government Security Powergroup but the acronym G.S.P has stuck in the public mind. For many it is still controversial that government money should go to fund a superhero group that only has a city-wide focus but supporters point out that no other city has been so exposed to the same level of these alien attacks as New York. The heroes chosen for the group were for many surprising. The team includes the veteran heroes Thundercloud and Eagle but also the totally new heroes Fang and Mindeye. The fifth member Firefly is somewhere between. In any case the team was assembled five weeks ago and this is their first major trial. Will they be able to deal with the aliens successfully?” Judy exclaimed.

She opened her mouth to continue when she suddenly heard a sound behind her. She twisted around in panic and found herself looking right into a torso covered in a blue and gold costume. At the center a stylistic thundercloud could be seen. Her gaze followed the torso upwards and she looked into Thundercloud’s mask. The face was hidden except his sparkling blue eyes.

She was by no means small for a girl but the hero looked gigantic as he stepped closer. The body packed with muscles gave the impression that he would have problems passing an ordinary door without breaking the door frame.

“This is a restricted area until we have caught all the monsters. You must leave this area directly,” he said. The hero’s voice was almost a whisper but it still rang with power and authority.

“We have not broken any laws,” Judy answered in a defensive tone.

“Are you not afraid to die?” Thundercloud asked.

“The public deserves to know,” Judy mumbled.

“There is one monster left; the hospitals will have enough to do without you stumbling into its claws, the hero said as he looked down on the two nervous women. “What will it take for me to convince you that you must leave?”

“Answer our questions and we will leave!” Judy exclaimed, struggling to regain the initiative.

“Ask quickly. I can’t wait here for long,” the hero said with a sigh. Judy stared back at him in surprise. She had never expected to get an affirmative answer. Her mind was totally blank; none of the obvious questions she had thought of when she dreamed about asking a superhero could be remembered.

Thundercloud waited for awhile and then looked at the display on the com-unit at his belt with a worried look on his face. Judy cringed; she must come up with a question fast.

“Do you have a girlfriend?” she blurted out.

Her skin turning crimson as she realized what she had just asked. The huge hero stared down at her with a smile on his lips. The topic at hand quickly made him erect and the two reporters looked like they would faint as they realized what the bulge in the restrictive costume hinted.

“I have no girlfriend or wife,” he answered, his voice trembling a bit at the last word.

“The tabloids claims you and Firefly are a couple,” Judy commented still red in shame that she had revealed her crush on the hero.

With a surge of panic she realized that they were sending to the broadcast station. This would surely not help her in getting more assignments. The hero was laughing at the question; Judy didn’t doubt every other listener did the same.

“Just proves how little you can trust them,” he replied. Suddenly his com-unit at the belt started to beep.

“Thundercloud here, any news?” he asked, pushing the send button.

“Eagle here, leave those civilians and continue with your mission. Fang has located the remaining monster. She is confident that her claws are sharp enough to cut through the beast’s armor, but I am reluctant to send her in. The monster is so strong that one single hit will maim her.”

“Understood, I will trick the monster into coming out of its hiding place,” Thundercloud answered and moved away from the clearing, leaving the two stunned woman behind.

As Thundercloud moved through the bushes his thoughts were drifting. The discussion with the reporters had made him horny and thus his mind was firmly locked on the female body of Firefly. The beast they were hunting was of course not aware of this and attacked violently when it left its hiding place. The strike came so fast that Thundercloud hardly reacted before he was tumbling 6 meters above the ground without any sense of what was up and down. The claw had left some holes in his costume but the skin beneath was unhurt.

“Sorry, I should have paid more attention,” Thundercloud screamed towards the com unit as he tried to figure out in which direction he was falling. He would not get hurt from the impact but mud in the face was never pleasant.

Fortunately the location of the beast had been discovered by the rest of the team. High up in the air Eagle was waiting, following the location of the escaping beast with a motion scanner. It was moving fast so he had to fly forward to keep it in range of the motion scanner.

“Take safety distance, I’m fire a homing missile against it,” Eagle ordered at the same time as the missile left his launcher. He followed the beast carefully to not overrun the missile that steadily approached it. Still he was filled with worry when he noticed that the monster was heading for the streets, outside the restricted area.

“Target approaching the streets. Should I disable the missile?” Eagle asked the base.

“Negative. The monster is moving towards the suburbs on Brooklyn. We must stun the beast so that Firefly gets time to intercept it,” the base called back.

Moments later the missile impacted. The roar of anger from the beast almost compared to the explosion. One of the hind legs had been hit, the explosion breaking the sturdy exoskeleton that covered the alien.

The momentum of the alien had already been high but the explosion added yet more momentum, sending it flying forward. It twisted in the air, extending the wicked claws on the forelegs to catch hold of something. The claws turned out to be to sharp, cutting through bushes and trees without effort.

The forward movement was brutally stopped when it reached the street. It tumbled into a passing car, sending it off the road. The alien beast still had some momentum left but claws digging into the ground took care of that.

Around it cars were desperately braking in order not to come near the beast. Eagle moved to intercept, he did not dare to use the rocket launcher in the middle of the road with civilians around.

Eagle finally got free line of sight to alien as he flew closer he activated the camera on his gear to snap some photos of the monster for later analysis.

The alien was vaguely humanoid and probably quite slim since the body even with body armor was not very bulky. The legs had large mechanical claws like it was meant to get a good grip when it jumped large distances, but the angle of the legs was wrong for there to be a human inside. More like a gorilla, but it was not clear why it would need the support of the arms to move around since it was not bulky like an gorilla.

Eagle studied the alien for weapons or tools but besides the dangerous look metal claws on hands and feet there was nothing. The helmet of the alien covered it totally and Eagle could not tell if the red light in the eye openings came from kind of technology of if the alien really had shining red eyes.

Incredibly the monster was up again even though there where many visible cracks in the exoskeleton. From the inside purple blood was flowing, but it still moved fast as it closed in on the closest car. If the people inside were screaming in fear it could not be heard over the roar from the alien. Eagle calculated the distance but he was still too far away for using the sonic blaster.

The alien extended its great claws and raised them to strike when it suddenly twisted in pain. A narrow red line through the night connected to its chest plate. The movement of the beast only worsened the damage as the hole digging into it turned out wider. With a shudder the alien tried to move away but the body could not sustain the damage and it collapsed on the ground.

A fair distance away Firefly mumbled a prayer of thanks and let her potent fire beam stop. As she did the glowing nimbus of light around her lessened and disappeared,

Meanwhile the car pushed off the road by the collision with the beast had come to a stop when it hit a large tree. The woman inside was fortunately not consciousness any longer and hadn’t heard the tearing sound of steel reduced to scraps of metal as.

Shortly afterwards Thundercloud came up onto the road, unhurt from the impact that had leveled a couple of trees.

The situation seemed to be stable. The monster was definitely dead, the smoke coming from the exoskeleton showed that the body inside already had begun to dissipate. In a few minutes only the cracked exoskeleton would remain. It was of little value, the scientists had already examined more exoskeleton parts than they could count. The analysis said that it was a weird fuse of bone and metal.

Some distance away Mindeye from the team was busy using his powers to calming people whose cars had bumped into each other when they braked.

On Thundercloud’s left there was the car that had impacted against the tree. Thundercloud looked at the ruined the car and decided to investigate. He easily parted it enough to fetch the wounded body from inside. It was a young woman. Long brown hair and a fair face but it took effort to see this due to the heavy injuries. It was incredible that such a small body could contain so much blood.

The huge hero placed her on the ground and looked inside her wallet to find her name. “Jennifer Stevens, 22 years old,” he read. Years as a hero had forced him to view things that no person should need to see but somehow this felt more awful than anything he had seen lately.

“Sheees is dying…nothing we can do for her. Her body issh broken,” Fang commented as she moved by. Her keen wolf senses made it simple to detect the injuries inside the girl; the real problem for her was to form human words. At first glance she could be mistaken for a gigantic wolf but anyone that saw her eyes filled with sorrow could not doubt there was true intelligence inside there.

“I will not forget you,” Thundercloud mumbled, and in his sad state of mind, without thinking he placed the wallet in his hidden pocket. Behind him the car had started to burn but he had placed the body safely away so he did not care.

The G.S.P. team assembled in the middle of the road and saw when an ambulance arrived to clean up the mess.

Eagle came flying at the same time as the G.S.P. transport arrived. It had been high in the atmosphere waiting for them to finish their mission. After a signal from one of the com-units it now landed, ready to bring them back to the base.

Mindeye was just about to enter the transport when he felt something touch him. At first he thought it was physical due to how solid it felt but then he realized that it was telepathic.

A telepath of incredible power was looking at his thoughts. Not using many mental probes to trick him or some other clever attack, it just used raw power to break into his mind. It was done it so fast that he barely had registered it.

Most super humans have natural defenses against mind reading and Mindeye felt panic assault him. As a first class psionic it should not be possible to invade his thoughts so easily. Trembling he sent out probes to try locate the intruder but he found nothing. There was no trace of the presence that was there a moment ago. The door to the G.S.P. plane closed and they took off without a sound.

Behind them on the ground lay this story’s lead character, Jennifer Stevens.

Chapter 1

Prisoner Inside the Hospital

Doctor Paul McFenna walked down the hallway at the Brooklyn Hospital Central and sighed. In his hand he had a list of people who had not been examined when they arrived to the hospital. The oldest victim had arrived hours ago; the single common factor was that they didn’t have any insurance to cover their bill.

The goal was to give emergency treatment even to these, but in summer there was always a lack of personnel. Normally they could manage but not when aliens were going on a rampage. The number of victims was not as high as earlier times but there were still five dead victims in this hospital alone. The superheroes from G.S.P. had done their job and dispatched all the monsters fairly quickly, but the first minutes were bad enough to give a sane person nightmares.

He gave the list a tired look. It seemed they would soon have to change the number of dead to six. The last name of the list was an unidentified woman with severe injuries. The injury list from the ambulance indicated a broken skull, at least 30 other broken bones, massive blood loss and extreme damage to internal organs. It was a miracle she even survived the trip to the hospital.

Paul entered the storeroom that was used to store victims that would scare less injured patients. To keep the worst cases that lacked insurance in plain sight meant too many questions and panicked patients. It was a rarely visited room, the people put here did normally not have any relatives or friends. It had seldom happened that a person put into this room could leave it on her own.

On one of the beds the girl lay very still. The ambulance personell had cut off her clothes but most of the body was covered in bandages so not much of the skin could be seen. He walked over to the phone on the wall to ask for a nurse to help him. Five minutes later the nurse arrived. Paul smiled when he saw that it was Claire. He knew her quite well since he had spent almost a whole year trying to get a date with her. He had tried everything and only got bored sighs back. “I am afraid not,” Jennifer answered after trying to sort out her memories for awhile.

“It was a car accident caused by a battle between aliens and superheroes,” McFenna said, hoping this would make her remember.

“Am I seriously hurt?” Jennifer asked.

“Just broken bones and shallow cuts,” the doctor answered. Momentary his gaze went to the test results on the table. The results hinted that something was seriously wrong but he very much doubted she would benefit from that knowledge.

“In normal cases I would assume the patient was dying with such test results, but there are no residual traces of shock,” he thought.

“We must speak more about your condition later but first there is some paperwork to do. We didn’t receive any identification papers. What is your full name and date of birth?” the doctor asked.

Jennifer looked back at him with a pale face. A bit impatient he waited to write it down and she cringed on the bed.

“Jennifer,” she answered.

“Last name?” he asked as he wrote it down.

“I don’t know,” she finally mumbled.

“I need your name, date of birth, and social security number if we are to give full treatment,” McFenna commented irritated.

“I am sorry but I don’t remember anything,” Jennifer answered with a weak voice. She really tried but there was nothing she could remember.

The doctor looked up, surprised at her words. “Stay calm. The fact that you know that you lack these memories hints that it is temporary,” the doctor answered.

“You don’t remember anything?” he asked.

“Nothing, if you told me that I was born this day my only objection would be that I thought people were born as a baby and grew up, but no memory verifies this is the case. For what I know babies could be something that I made up since I have never seen any,” she said.

“Feel no fear about this, babies do exist. In truth the fact that you remember people are born as children tells us that some parts of your memory are working,” McFenna commented.
