The Question about Ownership
Jennifer ran down the street of the sleeping city. She didn’t like the attention she attracted from the people that did not sleep. “The magical energy we feel follow the breathing of the person invoking the spell,” the demon inside her commented. The demon’s mental voice said, speaking with Jennifer’s own voice.
“Is this expected?” Jennifer wondered.
“From his rate of breathing it seems he has already gone into trance, it means he is very close to finishing the spell,” the demon responded. “Actually it could also indicate sloppy control of the magic. His summoning circle is flawed after all.”
“Tell me more!” Jennifer prompted. “Give some idea what we will be facing,”
“The spell is intended to bring the demon here and make it possess a suiting item or a person. Demonic summoning spells are designed so that they won’t allow the demon to come in the flesh. Yet that is provided the magic is done properly. Without looking at the precise errors done in his spells I can’t know how to reverse the spell or even if it is possible at all,” the demon explained.
Jennifer looked up and saw a faint red light from an apartment on the third floor. After checking the street to be deserted she jumped up to the fire escape and started to climb upwards. Finally she could see into the apartment, from a distant room she saw the source of red light, a glowing circle with runes on the floor.
“The window is locked, can we use our magic blade to open it?” Jennifer wondered.
“Yes, but make it quick. If a demon arrives we might really need the blade,” the demon responded.

“Very bad idea, his magic would collapse and do very unpredictable things. I am trying to determine if the circle is possible to complete, yet the number of errors are really more than I could imagine,” the demon responded.

“Without anything to possess the demon have much less powers to affect the surroundings, possible it could fail to take form at all if we are lucky,” the demon responded.

“Sis, answer me?” the guy demanded.

“If you are speaking truth, I don’t understand how you could resist the demon,” Edwards said.

“Strange, you are obviously demonic but don’t have any object that hold the binding spell, no visible magic that you could use to undo the possession,” Edwards noted.

“Patric, escape!” Edwards ordered.
“I will assist you master,” Patric complained.
“Fool,” Edwards responded. “Her flames did feed of my magic. You totally lack the skills to combat such a dangerous opponent.”
“Why the heck does he want to kill us?” Jennifer wondered.
“I think he fears our magic and believe that we will try to enslave him,” the demon responded.
“Enslave him, what for?” Jennifer wondered.
“He would if he could, when he can’t, he intends to kill us,” the demon responded.
“Need to kill him first then,” Jennifer thought.
“Pay attention!” the demon screamed mentally.

Frantic Jennifer looked around for a solution. There was a tree on her left, but too far away for her to reach it. More alarmingly she was surrounded by whirling pillars of earth that closed in on her. Her opponent Edwards was totally gone.

For a moment it seemed futile, but then she burst free of the pile of earth and landed on the grass. Stones came flying out of the whirling towers of earth . Jennifer stumbled up as fist sized stones clobbered her from every direction. Doing her best to protect her face Jennifer dodged to the left towards the tree.
“Climb the tree,” the demon ordered and Jennifer saw little reason to not follow the advice.
Jumping to reach the lower branches she pulled herself upwards to escape the barricade of stones coming from the whirling towers of earth. The towers twisted and started to hurl their stones further up.
“Now what?” Jennifer wondered.
“The third pillar is lagging behind and don’t send as many stones. I think the enemy hide inside it,” the demon said.
Jennifer smiled and jumped down from the tree. Landing on the ground she rolled forward started running. The stones were still aiming halfway up the tree so she had free path.
She cut into the pillar of earth and it collapsed. Jennifer tried to dodge away, but was too close. She became buried by earth and rocks. Grunting with effort she dug herself free. All the pillars had collapsed around her and now lay as huge piles of earth.
“Is it over?” Jennifer wondered.
“Be wary, still magic present,” the demon warned.
Suddenly her opponent burst free out of the ground right next to her. Jennifer reacted by instinct and thrust with her sword. Her opponent caught the blade with his red glove and red flames enveloped his arm.
No cry of agony came from him, when Jennifer looked the reason was obvious. Her earlier attack had cut the head off, yet the headless body still attacked her. With grim determination she cut and thrust again and again. The body in front of her blocked every attack with the red glove.
“Keep going. Eventually we will burn the arm off,” the demon observed.
The headless body tried to reach her yet again with monstrous strength, yet Jennifer blocked every attempt.

“I hurt all over, are we seriously injured?” Jennifer asked.
“No, only minor wounds and the blade does not drain us as much when we cut at magical auras. If we can clear away the mud covering us I can heal us without difficulty,” the demon answered.

“Fun indeed. We should do this more,” the demon responded.
“Where is our bag?” Jennifer wondered and looked around. Nowhere could she see any trace of it.
“The location were we dropped it is below these huge piles of earth from the whirling earth pillars,” the demon responded.

She made small progress, the load of earth was really massive. After a while she looked up and saw a huge wolf staring at her from some distance away.
“Don’t move!” a voice suddenly ordered from above. A man levitated there clothed in silver grey costume with the symbol of an eagle on his torso.
Jennifer looked around and saw that more costumed heroes had surrounded her. On her right she had a red haired woman covered by nimbus of light and clothed in a purple outfit. On larger distance on her left a man stood, covered in a black robe. Jennifer cast a glance over her shoulder and just like she had suspected a costumed hero waited there also, this one was a tall one clothed in a blue and gold with a thundercloud on his torso.
“I am not moving,” Jennifer acknowledged.
“We are superheroes from the Government Superhero Powergroup, better known as the G.S.P. This is Thundercloud, Firefly, Fang, Mindeye and myself I am Eagle,” Eagle explained as he pointed out who was who.
“One of them is passively trying to read our thoughts,” the demon noted.
“Any need to worry?” Jennifer wondered.
“Of course not silly, I am a demon,” the demon responded filled with laughter.
“Mindeye what is your evaluation?” Eagle asked.
“No, input at all for the moment,” Mindeye said. “Shall I remain passive?”
“Yes,” Eagle ordered and then turned towards Jennifer. “Would you care to explain what you are doing here Jennifer Stevens?”
“Stevens, is my last name Stevens? How come that these super heroes know it?” Jennifer wondered and then turned to his question. “Explaining what we are doing here might be tricky with the body,” she concluded.
“Oh, didn’t think on that. You must handle this, I don’t know what is customary around humans,” the demon thought.
“I am trying to locate my clothes in these piles of earth,” Jennifer finally stated after rejecting a number of ways to start her explanation.
“You expect them to be there?” Eagle wondered.
“Well, I dropped them and my bag of clothes in the area now covered in earth and mud. Just intended to have some sex and could not anticipate that a crazy manic would appear and attack me.” Jennifer said.

“I am still not following what happened here, can you enlighten me?” Eagle asked.

When he did not dare to do close combat with me he created these gigantic pillars of whirling earth to hurl stones toward me. “Why did you need to subdue her?” Eagle asked.
“She and a creepy doctor took advantage of me sexually as they tortured me,” Jennifer explained.

“As far as I can see her answers agree with what we have found,” Thundercloud objected. “Our surveillance of the hospital show the doctor rape his clients, only lack of time has prevented us from to act on that. As for the man in the basement, him being a mutant hunter explains where somebody like him would get a computer system that our tech crew has not been able to penetrate. Finally about the man dead here, during our training there was a rather famous bank robbery with a thief with a red glove that could catch bullets and make people go traumatized from distance. All in all, why not give her the benefit of the doubt?”
“Just great!” Eagle complained. “Tell her the details about the red gloved bank robber so we can’t cross reference what she says with this information.”
“Give it a rest, will you?” Firefly objected. “It is not like Thundercloud told anything that was not written ten times over in the papers.”
“Actually my oldest memory is from the hospital, so I don’t remember what the papers wrote earlier,” Jennifer said.
“Do you remember anything special from the accident that made you end up in the hospital?” Mindeye asked.
“That is surely a weird way to phrase the question,” Jennifer thought as she shook her head.
“Okay,” Eagle said. “I am still team leader. I don’t think we can let her go, she does admit to having killed somebody without any witnesses. If she lies to us and then goes on a rampage we would be in real trouble.”
“What are your goals and ambitions?” Firefly asked.
“There seem to be pretty much sexual tension here. What if we reveal our need for sex and try to make them interested in keeping us around. Doing hero stuff was really fun,” the demon thought.

A man clothed in a costume worked with one of the machines as she entered the room.
“Welcome, I am agent Wilkins” agent Wilkins said as he noticed her.
The agent was blond and slightly muscular, but of the kind that would not attract much attention in a crowd. She supposed he had been recruited as agent because this average look.
“Most of the lab crew is busy with different assignments, luckily for you and the G.S.P managers I could be called over to the G.S.P headquarters on short notice. Our task is to perform a number of tests to make sure you are qualified to be part of the G.S.P. team. Like you probably know close to fifty superheroes has taken the test, but only five was accepted into the team,” agent Wilkins told.
“Sounds like chances are slim,” Jennifer thought with a sense of disappointment.
“I am at your service,” Jennifer replied.
“We already have a good grip of your impressive healing ability. You seem rather athletic, but don’t have real super strength, right?” agent Wilkins asked.
“I am stronger than your average woman, yet I lack the muscle mass to really compete against muscular males,” Jennifer responded. From the smile on his face she guessed he thought she just had admitted he was stronger than her.
“He is not nearly muscular enough, we would wrestle him down without much effort,” Jennifer thought.
“Yet, he looks good enough to fuck,” the demon commented.
“Behave yourself, we need to appear professional if we should have any chance to be accepted into the group,” Jennifer responded.
“What are the capabilities of your energy sword?” agent Wilkins asked.

“What is happening?” agent Wilkins asked from some distance. He covered behind a machine keeping watch of the eerie red flames.
“That is metal from demon mail. Even our blade would need to aim for a joint to penetrate such, yet just like when fought the demon glove earlier our magic burn the demon after touching. Interesting that the effect lingers without a demon inside,” the demon observed.
“My weapon can not penetrate such material easily, yet it will put the aura around the material on fire,” Jennifer said, hoping desperately that he would not press with questions about why this happened.
“Is it dangerous?” Wilkins wondered.
“The flames interact with magic. A living being that is not demonic in nature would on contact with them would feed the flames with energy and become exhausted. Prolonged contact would make them lose consciousness. This will stop him feeding magic to the flames so permanent injury will not happen. The dead matter will be drained of its inherent magic and become fragile,” the demon explained.
“Not particularly,” said Jennifer. “Contact with it would make you exhausted but you would not be burnt or anything similar. Yet your clothes or any other dead matter, like those metal fittings for instance, would probably be destroyed.”
Jennifer pointed at the metal fittings and Wilkins had the opportunity to watch the cracks for a moment until they broke and the strange metal landed on the floor with a crash. The flames had ended by now.
“How would your blade work against a living being?” Wilkins asked.
“Cut them up I suppose,” Jennifer answered. She did not want to admit that had tested her sword on the demon summoner she had encountered earlier.
“Are there not any limits to the blade’s power?” Wilkins asked.
“I use my life force to fuel the blade. If I use it too much I fall down dead,” Jennifer responded.
“Pretty big disadvantage, how fast does your life force recover?” he asked.

“Seem like we have an agent that is going back to desktop work and someone who needs to retake the test,” Hockfield said.

“The point is that Wilkins is quite clever,” Anderson said. “The tape is the only proof that Jennifer Stevens did not take the test. We could at this moment decide that we never saw through the charade and give the girl G.S.P. membership.”
“Any reason for why doing this hypothetical false play?” Hockfield asked.
“Our psychical advisors indicate we have a problem with the G.S.P. group. The group dynamics are not forming between the male members like we hoped. Around the table everyone nodded their agreement even while Hockfield still looked skeptical.

“Sorry for the delay,” Agent Anderson said as he entered the room.
Jennifer looked up from the table and forced herself to smile back as she waited for the verdict. Behind him came Firefly clothed in a blue dress. She gave Jennifer a nod as she sat down at the side of the table.
“I am pleased to announce that you passed the review and are offered a full time job in the Government Superhero Powergroup,” agent Anderson said.
Jennifer stared back unable to come up with anything to say. She had really not expected to meet the qualification requirements after hearing how many heroes that had been rejected.
“Before you sign anything I advise you to really look at the details. I insisted on being included in this meeting so I could give you advice,” Firefly said.
Agent Anderson handed over a couple of documents and Jennifer spent a while going over the many items and regulations. Most of it looked fine, but a few details caught her attention.
“This passage here about terms for interaction with Mindeye’s psionic powers are not acceptable, I will not allow Mindeye or any other psionic to read or affect my thoughts,” Jennifer said.
“We would prefer that you do allow mind reading, but we have already accepted Fang into the group with the same condition so we can’t refuse,” agent Anderson responded.
“My demonic nature gives us a natural resistance against mental interference that far surpass anything a human can devise,” the demon commented.
“It says here that the license fee for psionic protection in the superhero costume will be subtracted from my salary, in this case I don’t want it,” Jennifer said.
“We supervisors really think it is essential with all the team members to have such protection,” agent Anderson said.

“Do you verify that you have natural defenses of similar specifications as our equipment and that you take full responsibility for legal or economical consequences of missing our technological protection?” agent Anderson wondered.
“Most certainly well beyond what your suits offer so I do acknowledge this,” Jennifer answered.
“I must say that you seem more sure about your mental defenses that Mindeye himself is, I will record your assertion in an appendix,” Anderson said.
“Next question, what is this deduction of money from my first salary that is explained as caused by me breaking the conduits of G.S.P. protocol?” Jennifer wondered.
“There is logical but a bit complicated reason,” Anderson said. “Basically the problem we have is that we can’t recruit a known criminal to the team. The red gloved villain is not known by the media so it should not offer any problem. The media did cover the death of the mutant hunter you killed in the basement and had pictures that prove your involvement, but it is our evaluation this problem is minimal since stalking a mutant or try to kill them are clearly illegal. Still this leaves us with the nurse on the hospital, surveillance tapes show clearly that was not any acts of self defense but a plain attack from your side.”
“I still don’t get the connection,” Jennifer said.

“One thing is clear,” Mindeye stated. “I have found little reason to trust you. I will speak with the supervisors. Yet until they step in I suppose I must behave like you are trusted teammate.”

“Indeed, I have tried but are totally unable to summon the magic blade,” the demon answered.

“I agree,” the demon thought. “Could we sneak out of the bed, I would like to check at the folder at the table. Would be good to know what they actually wrote in the memo about us.”
They could with some difficulty escape Thunderclouds embrace and left the bed. Jennifer looked through the folder and saw that it had the G.S.P. logo on it. Inside she found the memo about her being recruited into the group. There was also a set of photos of a large beast in some kind of green armor. The text below the picture read “Alien type A”.
“It looks kind of evil,” Jennifer thought.
“That is because it is a Noqurai demon. Standard infantry in the demonlord Nabudai’s demon army. I have executed a fair number of them in wars between my former master and Nabudai,” the demon commented.
“It is listed as an alien,” Jennifer observed with surprise.
“What does that word mean?” the demon wondered.
“It means that the G.S.P. are in truth battling demons, but they don’t believe in magic and have thus assumed the monsters must be coming from outer space,” Jennifer explained.
“Too bad we can’t explain to them the truth without exposing our demonic nature,” the demon thought.
