I could see Judy’s house from there, and before long, Judy’s parents were loading the car. Not long after that, Judy joined them outside. She was still sobbing, and her mom hugged her and tried to comfort her. Judy pushed her mom aside, jumped in the back seat and collapsed into a fetal position. Judy’s parents looked at each other almost apologetically. But it was too late to do anything. The house was sold and they were moving. They locked the front door to the house and drove away into the misty morning. I ran after them in a futile attempt to stop them, but the car turned the corner and faded into the distance.

That was the saddest goodbye I’ve ever had to make. I missed Judy terribly, but I kept my promise, and we nurtured a deep and loving long distance relationship for two glorious years. Eventually, we reunited happily in college, only to be driven apart when she went overseas. Our lives drifted apart, and Judy and I lost touch after that. We haven’t seen each other in thirteen years. Life goes on for me, but I still think about Judy and I wonder what our life would have been like together …
