“Why do you wanna work with me?” I ask and he shrugs his shoulders. “You guys help people. I wanna be a part of that. Plus. I gotta pay for my ticket home somehow.” I nod and tell him “Daniel. We don’t hire. We recruit. If you get recruited, there will be hard core training. Psych evaluations. And a hundred tests and background checks.” I tell him and he nods “I understand.” He says and I nod. “You only become a Private Hero when you pass every test, physical and security check.” “I understand. So will you give me a chance?” He asks hopefully and I sigh. “Come to the office and we’ll get the paperwork started.” I say and he smiles as Holly hugs him from behind.
We’re in the car headed to the office and I’m telling Daniel about the recruitment process. “This won’t be easy, you need to study around the clock and work out so hard you think you’re gonna die.” He smirks and says “Are you trying to talk me outta this?” “Ofcourse not. I just want you to understand what you’re getting into. This job is dangerous. And I wanna make sure you’re ready.” “Did I not prove yesterday that I can handle myself.” Daniel asks defensively. “Yeah! But a crazy ex is very different to the things you’ll be working to stop.” He shrugs and we continue our journey in silence.
We arrive at the office and wait for the elevator. We exit the elevator and I take Daniel to my office. I need to get his signatures on about 10 pieces of paper. Basically saying that he knows what he’s getting into. Everything has been explained to him clearly. He’s cool with giving out personal details and that he only becomes a Private Hero once all tests have been passed. Once all the paperwork is done I dismiss Daniel and tell him to wait for me in the coffee room.
Daniel’s POV in the coffee room…
I’m sat in the coffee room alone sipping my coffee. So the paperwork is all done once my background check, psych evaluation and other stuff is done, I’ll be able to get into training. I understand Rick can’t cut me any slack cause we’re family. To be honest I don’t want any special treatment. I need to work for this, off my own back. No favours. No special treatment. He’ll understand. You’re not the first woman that Dave’s harassed. He’s just a jerk. Trust me you punch him and he’ll back off.” Michelle shakes her head not knowing what to do. “Come on. Let’s go back to my office and we can talk girl to girl.” Michelle nods and Katy leads her out of the room.
Me and the guys have coffee and talk when Rick comes in. “I see you all met my cousin.” He says and David says “Yeah he just scared Dave away from the new secretary. Katy’s POV in her office with Michelle…
I’ve got Michelle calmed down but she’s still nervous about being in the office when Dave’s around. “He gives you any trouble, go to anyone here and they’ll sort him out. Daniel’s POV back home later that day…..
Today has been productive. I’m on the verge of getting a job that suits my skills and I spent some quality time with Jodi. We went to a steakhouse. She laughed and said that I should really talk to her about it. She’s right I’ll talk to her later. At one point I asked her what happened between her and mom and she froze. “I’m sorry I can’t talk about it.” She said and i pushed her a bit. “One day I’ll tell you about it but not today please.” She pleaded. “Okay. But we will talk about it before I go home.” I tell her and she nods. I changed the subject to happier things and soon we were back to laughing again.
Now I’m back home waiting for Holly to come home. She went out to town with Ashley for some girl time. I notice Holly and Ashley have become good friends. It’s good and I’m glad. I notice Ashley seems to idolize Holly like a sister.
It’s about 9:00 pm when they eventually come home. Me and Jodi are just sat watching TV with coffee. They come in laughing and Ashley hugs Holly thanking her for the good time. “She’s a sweet kid. We spent the first few hours in shops looking at clothes for her. I suggested a few skimpy outfits. But she didn’t feel comfortable wearing anything too revealing. She seemed kinda shy but I told her not to worry. It’s you that that makes the clothes hot. Not the other way round. We looked round some other shops and soon found some clothes for her. I listen to it ring and get no answer. “Shit!” I say and drop my phone. “Daniel talk to me what’s wrong? Talk to me.” I tell her my worry and she says “Okay don’t panic. Talk to Rick when he gets home maybe he can help.” She tells me holding me still. “Okay yeah you’re right.”
We go downstairs to find Rick but I only see Jodi, Ashley and Jake. “Cute outfit Holly.” Jodi says smiling. “Thanks, we need to talk to Rick do you know where he is?” Holly says. “He’s still working. He works late all these days. He probably won’t be back til tomorrow.” Jodi says. “Well I really need to talk to him its important. I’m driving to the office.” Before they can answer I run out the door and jump in the car.
I get to the office and run to Rick’s office. Nobody sees me. I get in and see he’s not here. DAMN IT! I’m about to leave when a case file on Rick’s desk catches my eye. The file says that he’s heading to the panther tonight to find a high value suspect. Sounds dangerous. What was I supposed to be doing? Who cares Rick’s gonna need some back up. Rick’s POV at the club….
I’m in the club as a casual customer. I’m dancing and laughing, but keeping my eyes open for my suspect. I move round the club looking like I’m having a good time. I would be if I wasn’t working. The big guy smokes while he listens. Then he puts his cigar out and walks off with Vincent towards the manager’s office. The two bodyguards follow. One of them goes into the office while the other stands outside.
I wait for a few minutes before I see them leave. The two bodyguards follow them back to the big guys chair and Vincent sits opposite. Now’s my chance. I walk to the managers office sticking to the shadows. I twist the door knob and push the door open. I creep inside and lock the door behind me. I wanna be out of here in two minutes. I start searching around the office, looking in the cupboards. I go to Vincent’s desk and pull the draws open. I find things like smokes, lighters pens. Then I pull open the top drawer and find a small bag. Inside is a powder. It’s a faint yellow. I’m not sure what it is but notice about 10 other small bags all with the same powder. I place the bag in my sock incase I get searched. I need to get this back to the lab for testing.
Time to leave. I open the door and see one of the two bodyguards. He punches me and I fall on my ass. The two bodyguards pick me up and hold me as the big guy enters, smoking another cigar. “Mr. Carter!” He says with a booming voice. “Do you know this man?” He says. Vincent comes in to view and his eyes widen when he sees me. “Yeah I know him. He’s from private heroes. His name is Rick Green.” He says. The big guys slowly turn to rage as he quickly turns to Vincent and grabs him by throat. Vincent’s hands grab his wrist as he slowly suffocates. “You failed to tell me that they were onto me!” The big guy says as he lifts Vincent off the ground. Vincent tries to say sorry but the air is being squashed out of him. “I have no patience for incompetence.” He says and I hear a crack. Vincent’s arms fall and just hang by his sides. He’s stops struggling and just hangs there dead. The big guy drops his body and it hits the floor with a thud.
The big guy turns to me and says “Hi” smiling. “Maximus Price!” I look at him funny and he chuckles. “I know, my family really wanted people to know we’re rich.” He says chuckling. “Wanna explain what you were doing in here?” He says. I shrug and say “I was looking for the bathroom.” He laughs. “I like a funny man. Search him!” He says to his bodyguards. Their hands are all over me, searching my pockets my jeans. They take my gun and hand it to Maximus. “Looks like you were planning some fun!” He says holding it up to me. “Can’t be too careful.” I say shrugging. “Ain’t that the truth!” He says pulling out a bag from his pocket. It has the same yellow powder. He pours it into his palm and says “Nighty night.” As he blows it in my face. I cough and choke for a moment. Maximus’ POV
Ok. I love this stuff. Who would of thought the most powerful weapon in the world was naturally growing. Mr. Green is in a zombie like state. He stares at me blankly. Time to end this problem. “Walk with me Mr. Green.” He says nothing but he follows me out the backdoor to the club. “Now you’re going to go back to your office and tell them the case is closed. There were no leads. The whole thing was a dead end. Then you will take Mr. Bishop to jail.” I tell him. He just stands there staring blankly. “Hey!” I look down the alley and see someone dressed in a black skin tight suit. The eyes are red. On his chest is a symbol of two swords in a Crossblade position. Who the fuck is this!?” I turn to Mr green and whisper in his ear. “Kill him!”
Daniel’s POV….
I watched this big guy blow some sort of powder in Rick’s face. I was watching through the office window. Now Rick is just standing beside him like nothing happened. The big guy whispers something in Rick’s ear and Rick charges me. He tackles me to the ground and starts taking shots at me. I raise my arms to shield my face. He gets a few shots in until I put my knee in his crotch. His face remains blank and expressionless like I didn’t do anything. He continues raining shots on me and I push him off me.
I stand and Rick wastes no time getting to his feet and coming back at me. He throws a shot at me which nearly makes contact with my jaw but I block. “RICK!” I call to him and he doesn’t even pause. He just keeps coming at me, throwing punches. I block some of his shots. I block a shot to the face but get hit in the ribs. I fall to my knees in pain and Rick kicks me on my back. He sits on me and puts his hands on my throat squeezing. He looks at me completely blankly while he tries to strangle me to death. I’m trying to pull his hands off me. My vision is going blurry. I see a bottle beside me. I grab it and smash it on his head and he falls beside me unconscious. I push him off me and look back down the alley. The big guy got away. I grab rick and put him over my shoulders. Fuck he’s heavy. I carry him to my car and drop him on the back seat.
I don’t have time to change out of the suit. It just means there’s gonna be alot of questions later. I drive 10 miles over the limit to Private Heroes. I park out front and get Rick out of the car. Luckily its late and there aren’t many people around. I carry Rick on my shoulders through the office. “Help! Someone. I need a doctor!” Katy runs out of her office and freeze when she sees me. Maybe I should have gotten changed. “Katy it’s Rick he needs help!” I say desperately.
