THE NEXT CHAPTER OF MY LIFE – Part 1

CHAPTER 1

I watched as the sun began to peek above the purple hills, East of my home in the Texas hill country. I sipped my coffee as the red ball of fire rose slowly in the sky. I thought back to the times when my wife, Alexis, and I would sit out on this same deck and watch the same beautiful light show day after day.

We were both early risers and enjoyed sitting outside with our morning coffee, listening to the mooing of our cattle in the distance. We would talk about what we had planned for the day as we sat there in the cool, early morning stillness.

My name is Steven Jamison and I own and operate this 12,000 acre cattle and horse ranch northwest of Bandera, Texas. This ranch has been in my family since Bandera County was formed in 1856 and I hope it is still family owned for as many years to come. It is called the Hermosas Colinas Ranch, which is Spanish for Beautiful Hills Ranch.

I’m 52 years old and have been widowed for two long years. My wife, Alexis, passed away after a long battle with cancer. I have two grown children, Matt and Allison. Both are graduates of Texas Tech and returned home after college, to work on the family ranch.

Loneliness is a terrible thing. When one loses their life partner, the days and nights run together and all purpose in life seems to drift away. I am so thankful that my kids have returned to the ranch and have taken care of it, and me, during my time of withdrawal from the day to day operations. Since Alexis’s death, I have spent most of the days sitting on this deck watching the cattle or on my horse, Tramp, riding and enjoying the beauty of my ranch. Mainly, I just like to be alone.

I recently have been able to put my wife’s death behind me and return to life. My old friends are happy that I have returned to the morning “meetings” at Maggie’s Coffee Shop and have returned to becoming active in our community again. In prior years I was active as a county commissioner, President of the local rodeo association, member of the board of the Cattleman’s Bank, past President of the Cattleman’s Association and numerous other boards and organizations throughout Bandera County.

Soon after my recovery from my grief, I found that I was the target of several well intentioned ladies from around the area. I have been told that I am a handsome man. I’m 6’ 2” tall, weigh 205 pounds and am in great shape. I have a gym in my home and use it on a regular basis. My doctor tells me that I have the body of a 35 year old.

Out of the clear blue, women will appear at my door with bowls of food and casual conversation. Matt and Allison tease me that I should be getting back into the dating scene, but that is one place I just am not ready to be right now. “Well Dad, there are several very attractive women around here that are sure making it clear that they would like to date you, or do whatever with you,” she grinned as she spoke.

One thing that Allison and I have always been able to do, is to be able to talk about anything, and I mean anything. Our conversations have always been very frank and to the point. Conversations about sex and relationships were not “out of bounds”, as so to speak. When I asked her about marriage, she would tell me that she didn’t want to rush it, she wanted to enjoy a full and rich sex life before she picked one man to settle down with. She said it was like buying a car, you had to test drive it first. I couldn’t argue that point, I remember having the same feelings when I was young, before I married Alexis.

“Well Dad, if you don’t like any of the gals around here, why don’t you try online dating. There are a lot of sites out there that you can get on and kind of shop around….hell, I’ve done it several times and met some really interesting men. I’ve even seen some sites that have people from Europe on them. There are some really good looking men and women on those sites, but be careful, a lot of those European women are looking to just get into the United States, then they’re gone. Just get a prenup before you tie any knots, we have to protect Hermosas Colinas so it always stays in our family.”

“Don’t worry about that sweetheart, you know I’ll protect this ranch at any cost,” I told her, “plus, I’m not looking to marry again…I just can’t get my head into it.”

“Just sayin’ Dad, you know what I mean,” she laughed. “The reason I stopped, is to make sure you’re going to the auction in San Antonio tomorrow, to watch the yearlings sell? One of the three of us need to be there.”

I replied, “Yes, I intend to go, I have some other business in San Antonio to attend to also. I’m going to leave this afternoon and will be staying at the St. Anthony. I don’t think I’ll be back for a couple of days. I presume that you and Matt can handle things without me can’t you?”

“Yes we can…. you’re not having a clandestine meeting with some hot woman are you?” she teased.

“You’ll never know,” I teased back.

“Matt will be by before you leave, he wants to talk to you about leasing the Medina Ranch. He said that we can get a long term lease and it’s well worth the money they’re asking. He said that there is even a possibility of a lease-purchase.”

“That’s part of my business in San Antonio, I have an appointment at the bank to talk to Russell about it. I need a little more of the information that Matt has to take with me. If you see Matt, tell him I’m going into Bandera to pick up some supplies for the fencing project and will be back before Noon.”

“Will do Dad,” she said to me as she started to her pickup. I couldn’t help but notice what a beautiful woman she had become. She is tall, long dark hair and a body to die for….yes I do notice these things about her…it’s hard to overlook.

Matt, is a really good looking man. He is almost as tall as me with dark hair and the hard body of a bodybuilder. He loves rodeo and is quite the ladies man. Several times I’ve gone to his home in the morning, only to find some beautiful girl leaving. He takes after me, I used to do the same thing before I met Alexis. My Dad used to give me a hard time when he would spot some shapely young woman leaving my place early in the morning. He would just laugh and say, “Damn I wish I was young and free again…I’d like a little piece of one of those girls you date….damn, damn, damn…..”

I was laughing to myself as I put on my hat and went out the door…memories of my Dad always make me smile.

I love the mornings on the ranch, it’s so peaceful. I watch as some of the mare’s play in the cool of the morning and the cattle out grazing before the heat of the day. I get in my pickup and head out toward town to get the supplies for the fence crew.

When I arrive in town I see that several of my friend’s pickups are parked at Maggie’s. I go on down the street to Tractor Supply. I’ll leave my pickup and trailer and let them load it while I go down to Maggie’s and listen to the latest gossip. I just love those guys.

When I arrive at Maggie’s, I see Mary Roberts is sitting at the counter with her Daughter. Mary and I have been friends since high school. We dated for a while, then, drifted apart when we went off to college. My folks always believed we would be married, but she found another man while she was away at school and married him. He was killed in a ranch accident several years ago and she has never remarried. Mary is still a very attractive woman and we seem to run into each other quite often. I sometimes think that she is keeping an eye on me as she always seems to show up where I am.

When Mary sees me come in, she smiles as she gets off of the counter stool. Jen, her daughter, smiles at me as her Mother hugs me and kisses me on the cheek.

“How are you two beautiful ladies doing this fine morning?” I asked them as Mary pulls away from her hug.

“We’re doing just fine Steve….I must say that you are looking fine this morning,” Mary said.

“Mighty fine,” Jen added. “Would you like to join us….we can grab that table there.”

“I’d love to,” I said as I pulled a chair out for Mary. I was always taught to be a gentleman around women. I helped Mary be seated, then Jen, then took a seat myself. I could see my friends grinning and shaking their heads as I sat down. I knew that in the back of their minds they all wished they were not attached and could do the things that I was free to do. I know a two of them cheat of their wives, but I don’t really care one way or the other if they do or don’t. Of course, those two have always swung a wide loop and they haven’t changed a bit from our school days.

Mary smiled at me as she said, “I’m so glad I ran into you this morning, I was going to stop by your ranch and invite you to a party Saturday evening. I’m having a few friends over and thought you might like to come. Jen is helping me put it together. We are going to barbeque some steaks over mesquite and have a few Patron Margaritas. We can dance after dinner…I’ve hired a trio from San Antonio to come out and play for us. I do hope you will join us Steve….it’s been too long, much too long….what do you say?”

The waitress arrived and gave me time to think before I answered. I really didn’t know if I wanted to go or not, but what the hell, I need to get out more and continue with life. I know that Alexis would want me to. I ordered a glass of iced tea and answered Mary, “You know, I think I’ve been holed up at the ranch too long, I’ll be glad to come. I think it will be a lot of fun, and Lord knows, I need to start enjoying life again.”

Mary smiled widely as she glanced over at Jen. “Oh, I’m so glad to hear that Steve. I know you’ll have great time and all of our friends will be so glad to see you out again.”

“I’m going to San Antonio this afternoon to take care of a little business…I’ll be back on Friday, so things will work out fine to…..er… uh… be..uh… able to come.” I interrupted my sentence when I felt a hand squeeze my leg, under the table. It had to be Jen, as she was sitting next to me and Mary was across the table. Jen was smiling at me and giving me a look that was hard to interpret. Mary continued talking, oblivious to what was going on.

“And Steve, you might want to wear a jacket. It’s going to be western casual and we’ll be out on the veranda and the evenings are just a little cool…you always did look so good in your Wranglers and a corduroy jacket. I could see desire in her eyes as she spoke. It made me a little uneasy. While in school, Mary and I had enjoyed sex more than once. Another squeeze on my leg brought me back to the present. “Around five, that will give us some time to visit and have a margarita or two before dinner,” Jen replied, again receiving a scornful look from her Mother.

“Ok then, I’ll see you then,” I replied.

As they left Maggie’s, I picked up my tea and wandered over to where the guys were. They were all grinning and giving me “the look”.

My best friend, Jared Magness, stood and reached his hand out to me. “You old dog, Mary would be a great catch for you. She’s rich, beautiful and smart as a whip. I’ve been noticing how she seems to be wherever you are, lately.”

My other friends were all grinning and giving me a hard time….I knew they were just jealous. “You guys don’t know what you’re talking about,” I quipped.

Fred Johnson grunted, “That’s bullshit and you know it Steve. Hell, any one of us wouldn’t mind slidin’ between the sheets with her….she’s gorgeous and I’m jealous.” The whole table was laughing heartily as I sat down.

Trying to change the subject, I said, “Well, what’s been going on around town, I figured I could come in here and get all the latest news before I go back out to the ranch.”

“Tom Harrison, another lifelong friend, grinned widely as he said, “Nothing new around here except you and Mary…..and you don’t think we didn’t all see how much attention Jen was giving you….you old dog you!”

After that comment everyone at the table started giving me verbal jabs and laughing loudly. I could feel my face turning red. Alexis had always said that I embarrass easily and always showed it.

“Oh hell, you guys, quit giving me such a hard time….this isn’t easy for me…….and you fuckers know it.”

Jared got serious, “Steve, you know we all think a lot of you and we all loved Alexis dearly….but….it’s time my friend, time for you to move on. Alexis wouldn’t want you to quit living because she’s gone, she would want you to move on and be happy. We are all glad to see you beginning to come out of the shell you placed around yourself after Alexis’s death. It’s good to have the friend we all knew, back again.”

Everyone around the table affirmed Jared’s statement. “We’ll slow down giving you a hard time, we only do it because you’re our friend and we want the best for you,” Fred stated. “Hell, we’re all just jealous cause all the single women, and a few married ones, have their eyes on you.” Everyone laughed again.

“Well, I’m out of here,” I said laughing, “you guys are going to have to find someone else to pick on. I have to get ready to go to the sale barn in San Antonio and watch our yearlings sell.”

As I was leaving Jared said, “Be careful if one of those bonita senoritas down there decide to ride you like a saddle bronc!”

I just waved him off as I walked out the door. I could hear them all guffawing me as the door shut. I couldn’t help but grin as I walked back up the street to Tractor Supply. What a great bunch of guys. They had all helped me a lot after Alexis died. None of them had to be asked. They would just show up with their trailers, unload their horses and go do the work that I wasn’t able to do at the time. I know that Matt appreciated the help, too.

When I got back to my pickup and trailer, I could see that the guys had almost finished loading my fencing supplies. Bob Werner, the manager, was finishing up counting the items and checking them off of the invoice. “Well Steve, I think we have it all…I double checked the count and it’s all there. You know, it’s really good to see you out and about again. I think everyone in town has missed your smiling face. You’ll have to come by and have dinner with Doris and I sometime, we’d be glad to see you.”

“Thank you Bob, it feels good to be out again….I’m trying.” I took the invoice, got into my truck and headed home. I needed to get a move on so I could get to San Antonio before it got too late. I will have a steak, a few drinks and go to bed. I’ve got a long day tomorrow.

When I got back to the ranch, I unhooked the trailer and went to the house to pack a few things for the trip. Matt pulled up behind me on the driveway and got out. “Hi Dad, glad I caught you before you left. Allison said you were leaving after lunch and I wanted to fill you in on my negotiations on the Medina Ranch. Dad, I think I’ve got a great deal made, tell me what you think. First, we can have a lease purchase. The sale price will be $15 million, that’s down from 17. Our annual lease payment will be $875,000 a year for ten years, of which a total of $6,500,000 will apply to the purchase price at the end, if we exercise the purchase option to purchase in ten years. This includes leasing all the livestock on the property. At current prices the livestock is worth over 3 million. The Medina’s are ready to get out…all of their kids have finished college and have big jobs elsewhere, so they don’t want anything to do with the ranch. Ernesto told me that because it’s you, he’s making a much better deal than he did for anyone else….and he has made us a hell of a deal. I knew you were going to the bank while you are in San Antonio and knew you would like this information. I’ve got it all spelled out in this folder. I don’t think we can do any better.”

I opened the folder and looked at the numbers. Matt was right, it was a hell of a deal. Being a lease purchase, we won’t have to come up with a big down payment, just the first year lease. That alone would save us several hundred thousand dollars, plus the fact that the livestock is included….wow, Matt had done very well. This will over double our current operation and make us the largest ranch around. “Good job Matt, I couldn’t have done better myself,” I told him as I gave him a big hug and a handshake.

“Dad, I didn’t do it all by myself, Allison helped a lot, running the numbers and putting them in spread sheet form. She has a great business head and helped me a lot. She did most of the reports in the performa you’re taking to the bank. We make a good team.”

“I agree son, we’ve got a good operation here, especially since you two came home. I would probably be doing the same thing Ernesto is doing if you two had went on to city jobs. I’m glad you’re here. I’ll get the bank work done while I’m in San Antonio, I know that Russell will go for it. The business plan is solid and shows to be very profitable. Well, I’d better go get packed and get on my way. If you need anything, call me.”

“Ok Dad, will do,” he said as he went to his truck.

I grabbed a sandwich and packed then took off for the city. I would get there in good time. I should be able to grab a shower, change clothes and go out for dinner. The St. Anthony is a great hotel and has a fantastic restaurant. Alexis and I spent a lot of time there during our marriage.

CHAPTER 3

I arrived at the hotel shortly after 4 pm. I checked in and took a shower then watched the news and weather. I decided to go down to the bar and have a drink before dinner. I had a dinner reservation made for 6:30 so that should give me enough time for a couple of drinks. I put on my best Wranglers, a light blue George Strait shirt, my ostrich boots and my new black O’Farrell hat then went down to the bar.

When I arrived at the lounge, I decided to sit at the bar. There weren’t many people in there this early in the evening. I ordered a Makers Mark on the rocks and settled back into the chair and began to look around. There were mostly business types in there, sitting at tables, discussing the papers lying on the table. I noticed a very attractive 40 something brunette sitting at a table alone, looking at the pages of a folder she was holding. I couldn’t help but admire her. She was wearing glasses and her long hair was halfway down her back. She was about 5’9”, very shapely, wearing a white blouse with ruffles down the front, a tight skirt above her knees, and high heels. There is a briefcase sitting on the floor beside her chair.

She noticed me looking at her and smiled as she pulled her glasses down and took a good look at me. I tipped my hat and she grinned widely as she took her glasses off and lay the folder down. She sat there for a moment, then got up and started walking toward me. I was thinking to myself, “She is probably a women’s rights activist and is coming over here to chew my ass out for staring at her.” I didn’t know whether to run or stay.

She walked directly to me. I have to say, she is one beautiful woman… one any man would be proud to be with. But, back to reality, I had better prepare myself for a good ass chewing. She pulled a chair out beside me and sat down. She extended her hand and said, “Hi, I’m Lisa, what is your name?”

I stammered a bit and said, “I’m….uh….Steven, Steven Jamison, uh…Steve.”

She continued looking into my eyes and said, “It’s a real pleasure to meet you…Steve. I couldn’t help but notice you looking at me and I couldn’t seem to look away from you, so, I decided to come over here and meet you. I saw no reason to continue just sneaking peeks at each other all evening, I knew I wanted to know you, so here I am.”

“Can I buy you a drink Lisa?”

“Yes, you can. Why don’t we go back to my table, it’s much more comfortable. I was just looking over a couple of reports…I’ll put them away.”

I asked her what she was drinking and she told me she would have a Tanqueray and tonic, with a twist. I picked up her drink and mine and followed her to her table. She opened her briefcase and put the report inside and closed it. “Now, Steve, tell me about yourself.” She put the glass to her lips and took a sip.

“I’m a rancher. I own a ranch over by Bandera. I’m a widower and have two grown kids. I’m a graduate of Texas A&M with a Masters degree in ag-business and I’m in San Antonio on business. What about you?”

“Interesting,” she said, “My last name is Swanson. I own a consulting firm. in Dallas. I’m divorced…two years, no children. I graduated from Baylor with a MBA. I’m here in town for a few days meeting with a client.”

Lisa and I chatted through two more drinks. I asked her if she had plans for dinner and she replied, “Just dinner with you.”

We left the lounge and walked toward the restaurant, still chatting and laughing. She stopped at the desk and asked the clerk, “Will you be good enough to keep my briefcase behind the desk till we finish with dinner. Lisa Swanson….604.”

“Certainly, Ma’am, I’ll be glad to,” the clerk replied.

Lisa put her arm around mine and we walked to the restaurant. The Host greeted us and I said to him, “Reservation for Jamison.”

“Yes sir, it’s right here. I see it’s for one person, do you want it for two?”

“Yes, please.” I replied.

“May I take your hat sir,” he asked.

“Yes you may, but be careful with it.”

We were led to a table for two that was kind of out of the way. We were seated and ordered two more drinks and looked at the menu. The waiter returned to our table a short while later with our drinks and asked if we wanted to order now or wait for a while. Lisa spoke up, “I think we would like to wait for a while, if that’s ok”

“Certainly Madam, I’ll check back in a while,” he replied.

“I’m sorry,” she said, “I hope that is alright with you, I’d love to talk with you more, know a little more about you, like….tell me about your hat, you seem to be very protective of it.”

“Well, yes. It’s very special. I have my hats made at O’Farrell Hat Company in Durango, Colorado. Their hats are custom made to the shape of one’s head, so they fit perfectly. It takes about 2 months to get it after it’s ordered. It is a 50X beaver. O’Farrell had made hats for people like John Wayne, Lyndon Johnson, Garth Brooks, George Strait and many others. You can’t buy a better hat. That’s why I’m particular about it.”

Lisa smiled at me, “I’ve always knew that cowboys were pretty particular about their hats, I’ve seen it in Ft. Worth out at Billy Bob’s. Someone gets their hat knocked off and the fight is on. What is that hat of yours worth, if I may ask.”

“Well, I paid a little over $1500 for that one,” I replied.

“You have to be kidding, $1500 for a hat?”

“No, I’m not kidding,” I told her, “what did you pay for your shoes?” I grinned.

“Point taken,” she laughed.

Lisa and I finished dinner and a lot of conversation. We decided to go back to the lounge and have a brandy. We drank two glasses of Courvoisier, continuing our conversation and laughing.

It was approaching 1:30 am. Lisa asked me, “So, how long are you here in town?”

“I’ll be here till Friday morning, then I have to go home. How about you?”

“I’m leaving on Friday morning, as well. I’d really like to see you again Steve, I can’t remember when I’ve laughed so much or had a better evening. What are you doing tomorrow?”

“Tomorrow morning I have a meeting with my banker and tomorrow afternoon I am going to the livestock auction to watch some of my yearlings sell. What are you doing tomorrow afternoon, would you be free to come to the auction with me?” I asked.

“Wellllllll, I…… have meetings with my client tomorrow morning and maybe during the afternoon, but…….I can cancel the afternoon meetings, I think I can get it all done in the morning…………I’d love to go to the auction with you. I’ve never been to one and I think it would be exciting. You’ve got a date cowboy.”

“Great,” I said, “I’ll meet you here in the lobby at noon. We can get lunch out at the sale ring, they have a good restaurant there. My cattle won’t sell till around 3:00 so we’ll have time. I believe our rooms are on the same floor, 6 right? You’re in 604, I heard you tell the clerk……I’m in 615.”

Lisa smiled and went to the desk to retrieve her briefcase. We walked to the elevator together and boarded. On the way up, she sat her briefcase down on the floor, wrapped her arms around me and kissed me. It caught me off guard….I didn’t know what else to do but wrap my arms around her and kiss her back. “I just had to have one more kiss before I went to bed, I really like you Steve, I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone like you.” She turned and ran down the hallway to her room, stopped, blew me another kiss and went inside.

I went into my room, quite stunned by the events of the evening. I undressed and went to bed, thinking about Lisa and our chance meeting. I drifted off to sleep with her image on my mind.

CHAPTER 4

I awoke at about 6:30 am. I decided to go down to the gym and work out for a half hour. I always feel a lot better when I have a work out in the morning. I put on my shorts, t-shirt and Nikes, grabbed a towel and headed down to the gym. While I was waiting for the elevator, Lisa came up behind me, dressed in business attire. I turned around when she said good morning.

“Well good morning to you too Lisa. You look fantastic, wow, you really look good.”

She smiled at me and kissed me. “I have to say you look very casual this morning, but good. I can’t wait to see you at noon…I just know this is going to be a wonderful day.”

The elevator door opened and we both got aboard. The gym was on the 2nd floor so I pushed 2 for me and L for Lisa. When the elevator stopped at 2, she kissed me again, before I got off. I was really looking forward to our “date” this afternoon. I went to the gym and had a really good workout. I went back to my room, showered and got dressed for the day. I went downstairs to the coffee shop and ordered breakfast.

As I drank my coffee I was thinking about Lisa and our upcoming date. I kind of knew how the day would go, remembering our parting conversation last night. I was nervous, no doubt about that. It had been quite a while since I had been with a woman and I wasn’t sure how things would go.

When I finished breakfast, I went to the bank for my appointment. When I got there, Russell met me in the lobby and greeted me with a handshake. “It’s good to see you Steve. Come on back to my office and let’s talk.”

We went back to Russell’s office and he closed the door. We went to his desk and sat down. “Tell me about this deal you have been working on. It sounds pretty good.”

“Russell, it’s a sweet deal. Here is the performa that Allison and Matt put together. I think that everything is covered in here.” I handed the folder to him and he began to look through it.

“Are these numbers correct Steve?”

If that’s the case, usually there will only be one animal killed, but there were two this time, making me think that maybe someone was selling the beef.

When I got back to the barn, I unsaddled Tramp and brushed him out. This is one thing that he really likes. I guess it feels good to him to feel the brush rub across his skin. I parked the ATV behind the battery enclosure and packed everything else up to the shooting level of the blind. The morning is cool, so I just open all the windows and let the gentle breeze blow through.

I didn’t have to wait long, a herd of hogs showed up at the feeder about a half hour later. I think today I’m going to see just how many of these pests I can drop with one shot. Around the feeder, they crowd up to pick up the corn from the ground. If you wait, you can get a good angle with three or four of them in a line. I shoot a steel jacketed bullet that doesn’t mushroom, so I can penetrate as many of their bodies as I can. My record is 4 hogs in one shot. Most of the time it’s two, sometimes three. I have a good lineup of 5 hogs, however, I doubt that I can penetrate them all with a bullet…..hopefully three. I take careful aim from my bench rest and squeeze the trigger. The hogs scatter at the sound of the shot, but two of them are laying on the ground squealing and writhing on the ground. Two down, half million to go, I think to myself. It is well after noon and the heat is rising. I think I’ll call it a day and go to town and have a late lunch at the diner. I’ve shot 14 of the pests this morning. I’ll come back later, when it cools off a little and drag the bodies to the disposal pit. I am going to leave the ammo, I’ll be back soon and use it again. The blind is over a mile from any public roads, so no one will be messing around near it. I start the ATV and head back to the barn to get my truck.

Jill brought me two more beers before bringing the check. As she laid it down on the table, she said, “If you come by after I get off at 6, I’ll buy you beer or two.”

She smiled and walked away saying, “I’ll be here, if you don’t see me, I’ll probably be in the back changing clothes and I’ll be right out.”

After you’ve flushed your cows, they bring in the crew and porta-corrals and breed the cows you have ready, then come back in 30 days and check to make sure they’re all pregnant. If they’re not, they inseminate the open ones again, then come back 30 days later. If any of the cows are not pregnant this time, you cull them and replace them with bred heifers. It’s a good program.

They have cattle buyers that will buy everything you produce through their program, at top dollar….plus. Are you thinking about going with them?”

“I’ve been looking at their program, and I think I may start using it on the Medina Ranch. Ernesto has rebuilt his herd over the past few years with high performance cows. I think that with this program we can maximize the income on that ranch, what do you think?”

“I think that you’re damn progressive in your thinking Steve, unlike a lot of the other ranchers in this area who prefer to do it the ‘old fashion way’. I think you’re on the right track. What we will need to do, is do blood samples on the cows, to make sure we have a genetically superior herd. I can get started sometime next week, if you want?”

“I don’t take possession till the 1st of the month, so I’d prefer to wait till then. Let’s schedule it sometime after the first.”

“Let me look at my appointment book, I see that I have the 3rd through the 8th open. I think we can do that herd in about 4 days…..want to schedule it for then?”

“Put it on the books James, I’ll have Matt arrange to begin penning the cows on the first so we will have a group ready to start on the 3rd. The hands can continue penning cattle so you won’t have to wait to get your work done. Ok, it’s a done deal then, I’ll put it on my calendar. Hope you have a productive afternoon, James…..see ya, I have a date.”

All I heard was James mumble under his breath, “Yeah, you damn horn dog.”

I smiled all the way to my truck. I got to Maggie’s just before 6. I didn’t see Jill anywhere around, so I figured she was in the back changing clothes. There were several people I knew in Maggie’s, but that really didn’t matter much to me. I acknowledged a few friends on my way to an out of the way table. I didn’t have to wait long, Jill appeared from the back. She was wearing jeans and a blouse that was very low cut, showing an ample amount of her breast. She smiled as she came to my table.
