For many years training in martial arts had been at the center of my families’ activities. This year was different for now I was 18, and was nearing the top of my class in FaQ. I was competing at the age of eight but now ten years later I was fighting the elite of the elite. This was a chance to go beyond the local tournaments, state, regionals and past the nationals which I had won the last 4 yrs. running. Now I was in sight of the Olympics. If I could just keep this up I would have the reputation and people would pay big to have me teach. I love to teach, it gives me a lot of satisfaction on different levels.
This qualifier tournament was the key; if I won here I would be a shoe in for the Olympic team. The tournament was 500 miles away in Columbus Ohio so we’d be staying in motels. The only problem on my mind was Debbie. I didn’t have to fight her, well at least not physically, but I did have to keep focused with her around. Debbie was another student at the club I belong to, and we hung around each other for years. She had the girl next door, tom boy look going but recently she had developed. Some show up in their uniforms for fighting but often end up peeling layer after layer until the weight limit is met or they are at their comfort level of undress. Some had no modesty and would be in their undergarments before ever stepping on the scale. Some would request a screen so that they were not visible to the room. Either way I was the one moving the weight along the bar and writing the weights down for both males and females. So at times I would get an eye full of the body in front of me.
Debbie never had a problem making weight and usually just stepped up to the scale removed her clothing down to a pair of track shorts and sports bra. This year was different though. The next morning I was walking into the restaurant to meet my parents when I saw Debbie sitting with her parents and her trainer. She glanced at me and then quickly away. I wondered if she’d had second thoughts about kissing me or what. I could see she wasn’t eating much and every one at her table seemed ticked off. I found my way to my parents and they were happy to see me, and commented on how the different people in the club were doing with weigh in yesterday.
I wasn’t really into the whole conversation and took the opportunity of another couple approaching our table, to talk with my parents, to leave and went to the arena where the tournament was happening. I found myself way up in the seating watching as folks wandered in and out some spectators others competitors, and yet others working to get things set up.
