Chapter 7: Tom meets the kittens.

Captain Brown fired the boat’s engine up and they headed out along the cliffs to return to the cove.

Tom was feeling braver now he had saved the day rescuing Pisces. Had he impressed the captain enough to push his luck?

“Captain, how thin is the ice I am walking on now?”

“Don’t push your luck, but okay, certainly not thin ice, well pretty thick in fact.” Captain Brown thought Tom now deserved some credit, “Thank you, Tom. If you hadn’t been here in this world today, I would have been with the fleet when they left earlier today. We all would have sailed by oblivious, with none of us noticing the buoy.”

Now they still had some time to kill. Tom asked Captain Brown about the human family’s request to go fishing on a boat that afternoon.

“Ha, we don’t do day trips for tourists, these are working boats.”

Captain’s reply was quite a rebuff, but Tom thought a while before his reply.

“Yes, but a brief trip will help people to experience the traditional life of a fisherdog. It could attract visitors to bring a little extra money into Kitty’s pub and B&B. Above all, it could help any retired fisherdogs to earn some extra cash, without them having to resort to a full-time job. It could take only a few hours a week depending on bookings, and if the weather turns foul, you can cancel any trips. No one will want to go out in a storm. The boats finish by 4 pm, on their way home one could drop a few pots off with some catch in them nearby by, to be recovered by the tourists an hour later. It will give any retiree a chance to relive his life at sea and the tourists would love to hear a few old sea dog stories.” Tom wasn’t sure if he could convince the Captain.

“Hmm, food for thought, I know who I can ask and let them decide.” Captain Brown said, starting to talk on the radio.

Tom left the Captain and went to the rear of the boat to sit and enjoyed the passing scenery.

After a short while Captain Brown came to the back of the boat, “Thomas is going to talk to his father Bob, he is a retired captain. Thomas agrees with your idea and he thinks his dad will enjoy it. Captain Bob will find your human family and make arrangements with them before Thomas returns, allowing them to have their fishing trip.”

“Wow, thanks, Captain that is great, they will be pleased.”

Soon they caught up with the other boats, almost herding the flotilla of tiny boats along the coast. Tom could hear Captain Brown talking again in the wheelhouse. Then the Captain appeared with a plate full of mussels and scallops to share, all cooked ready to eat.

“Eat up. It’s been a busy day.”

Tom wolfed down his share, loving the freshly caught tasty shellfish sitting on the back of the boat in the sunshine, enjoying the boat trip home.

At the headland, before they turned into the cove, Captain Brown pointed out Thomas’s boat, dropping three pots into the water with buoys. They then continue around to disappear into the cove. Tom and Captain Brown soon rounded the headland and saw the cove busy with boats and fisherdogs.

Most of the boats were already beached. Thomas’s boat was just half beached as their catch was being unloaded and the human family stood close by. The father stood by an old grey dog, looking the spitting image of Captain Brown. The father was now wearing a buoyancy aid and slipping a buoyancy aid for their young son. The spare crew member on the beach gave the father a leg up into the boat and then lifted his son to him. The old grey dog was obviously the retired Captain Bob. He showed his experience as he deftly leapt up into the boat to greet Thomas, his son.

Thomas gave a signal. The rope was released, and the boat slipped back into the ocean. The father and son waved at mother and daughter on the beach. Captain Bob lit up a pipe, getting into character. As Thomas spun the boat around to leave, Captain Bob started to tell tales of a fisherdog’s life to father and son. The mother and daughter watched for a short while, then turned and made their way up the beach to Kitty’s pub.

Captain Brown was still holding his boat off, waiting for a signal that would announce his turn. As soon as he received a wave from a fisherdog on the beach, he ran his boat onto one of the timber railed slipways. A fisher dog was waiting and clipped a wire hawser to the front of the boat. The winch then pulled the boat up onto the beach.

Tom could see Sarah stood on the small grassy point by the bench. She waved and lifted a large shopping bag that she was carrying, pointing at him, then the bag. Insinuating whatever was in the bag was for him. Standing alongside Sarah were three cats. All stood out by being dressed in clothes. All in 1950s style dresses, as if they have just had ice creams from a soda shop and were waiting for James Dean to ride up on his motorcycle. He saw Kitty standing in front of her pub, frantically waving with relief seeing him return safely.

Finally, the winch stopped bringing Captain Brown’s boat to nestle between two other beached boats. Captain Brown jumped down and Tom passed him his gear bag and then jumped down onto the beach himself. He made his way up towards Sarah and what must be her kittens.

The news of his saving Pisces the Mermaid seemed to be common knowledge now. Fisherdogs slapped him on the back as he passed, giving affirmative comments such as ‘Well done’, ‘Top man’ and even one ‘Top Dog!’

“Sarah, lovely to see you, when you said kittens I wasn’t expecting three grown cats!” Tom said as he reached the grassy knoll to meet with Sarah and her kittens.

“Mum does that, she just can’t lose the kitten moniker, but we’ve had to grow up with it. Hi, I’m Lucy,” said the kitten closest to Sarah as she held her hand out to shake. The three were identical, smaller copies of Sarah.

“Afternoon ladies, I’m Tom.”

“Hi, I’m Chrys with a Y. We’ve all heard that you are quite a hero today Tom, that is quite something saving a Mermaid,” Kitten number 2 said, holding her hand out to shake.

“So you must be Clair?” Tom said, holding his hand out to the smiling kitten number 3.

Sarah said, “Tom, whilst I was in Turo to meet the kittens, I got you some clothes, as you are in dire need to change now!” Wrinkling her nose up in mock disgust and passing Tom the large bag she held. Inside he found a pair of his signature combat trousers and shorts, with several T-shirts in his favourite colours, plain black and navy blue. At the bottom of the bag were half a dozen boxer shorts, Tom looked at Sarah questioningly, who smiled in return.

“That’s brilliant. After spending the day at sea, I could do with a shower and it will be nice to get some clean clothes on, although I don’t have any money to pay you back.” He apologised.

“It’s alright, you don’t need to, Kitty paid for it all, instead of wages. As it seems you are to be staying with us for a while longer than you expected.” Sarah said whilst giving Tom a knowing smile.

“Oh, you know?”

“Yes, I’m just glad you have returned safely.” The three kittens now looked quizzically at Sarah and Tom. Realising there was more to this exchange than met the eye.

“Er, which one of you lovely ladies is the geneticist?” Tom asked, as he now had more questions than answers.

“I am, Lucy,” Lucy answered, looking a little dumbfounded.

“We need to sit down together sometime and have a talk, as I have some questions.”

This kept all three kittens looking puzzled. Sarah whispered, “I will explain tonight before we come down Kitty’s tonight. I think we may need to celebrate Tom’s heroic rescue tonight.”

“Oh, it’s ok. You don’t need to do anything special. It was nothing.”

“It’s normal here, Tom, when someone helps the community.”

Tom, now having clean clothes available to him, began to feel his skin crawling and in dire need of a shower. “Sorry Ladies, can I make my excuses and go have a shower and change clothes?”

“Please do!” Sarah said laughing as Tom made his way back to Kitty’s pub. Once inside, Kitty was in the bar and rushed over to him, pleased to see him safe, and gave him a hug and a kiss.

“I was so worried when all the other boats returned without you. I was panicking as you came round the headland with Captain Brown safe. You realise that you will be a guest of honour in the bar tonight?”

“That’s scary, but now I need to shower and put some nice new clothes on. Oh, and thanks for the clothes.”

“We didn’t know what you would like, so I told Sarah to buy copies of what you already have. If you fancy anything else, just ask and we will get it. Captain Brown has forbidden me to allocate you any money. So you will have to stay near the village, but don’t worry, we will ensure you have everything you need.”

“Thanks, Kitty, I appreciate that.”

Taking his leave from Kitty, Tom went up to his room, took his boots off and spilt the contents of the bag out onto his bed. He grabbed the clean trousers, a pair of boxers, a T-shirt, clean socks, and his towel, and dashed to the shower. He entered the shared shower room with his arms full of clean clothes. Tom’s night vision allowed him to not worry about immediately switching the light on. He placed his clean clothes where they will stay dry, and the towel within easy reach of the shower.

As Tom pulled off his T-shirt, he caught a sweet smell he should recognise. Then he remembered who the source of the sweet smell was, just at the same time the light switched on and he heard the door lock click. He turned to confirm his assumption. Stood behind him, having locked the door, was the blonde-haired, short, top-heavy, twenty-something human family’s daughter. “Hi, you shouldn’t be here,” Tom tried to convince her.

Thirty minutes later he was showered and dressed in new clothes, making his way into the bar to see how he can help Kitty.

“Tom, one of the fisherdogs has said they need you down at the beach with Captain Brown.”

“Okay, thanks,” Tom thanked Kitty and started his way down towards the beach. The beach was busy with everyone at the water’s edge looking out to sea. Tom could see Captain Brown stood alongside the rocks at the base of the grassy knoll at the centre of the beach.

Two merpeople were swimming towards the outcrop of rocks. Captain Brown turned and beckoned Tom to him. Tom reached Captain Brown, and they both made their way out along the rocky outcrop to meet the merpeople.

Tom and Captain Brown could stand on a rock ledge that reached seawards out from the outcrop, inches above the waterline. The water in front of the rock was deep, allowing the merpeople to safely come close and tread water, without having to shout.

One was Pisces the Mermaid. The other was a large broad-shouldered Merman, with long grey hair and a long grey beard.

Captain Brown introduced them. “Tom, this is pod and regional merpeople school leader, Triton, and you know Princess Pisces.”

Triton swam forward, reached out and strongly shook Tom’s outstretched hand. “Tom, very pleased to meet you, Pisces has explained, and we are indebted to you for saving her.”

“Hey, I am just relieved I was there to see the buoy. Not being a fisherdog, I could easily have missed it or ignored it and cost Pisces her life.”

“We are all thankful, and for that reason, we have something for you.”

Triton then held his other hand out. Hanging from his hand was a thin gold chain and a pendant that looked like it had a short, straw, like shell. It impressed Captain Brown. Tom wasn’t so impressed, jewellery not being his first choice as any reward. But he took it and hung it around his neck.

Triton noticed this and explained. “I know it doesn’t look much, Tom. Blow three times through the shell under the sea and any merperson within hearing distance will come to your aid. You won’t hear anything, but to us it will be like you blowing a foghorn.”

“Thanks, I appreciate that and hope I never have to use it. But here is the 64 million dollar question; did you find what it was worth killing Pisces for?”

Now it was the turn of Pisces to swim forwards and handed Tom a plastic yellow box, about the size of a small sandwich box. About 4 inches wide by 6 inches long and 4 inches deep, looking like a waterproof box for camera equipment. It had snap-over toggle fixings and no lock. On the box was a sign, looking like something between a hazard symbol and a nuclear warning sign. Embossed on it were the letters IGC.

“We’ve not opened it,” Pisces said. “It stood out like a sore thumb even in the seaweed bed where we found it. Thankfully, there were a lot of us searching. But it doesn’t look big enough to be important?”

“What’s that sign mean, Captain?” Tom asked, showing the box to Captain Brown, but didn’t pass it to him. For the moment, he wanted to keep hold of it, as something was not adding up.

“It is a warning, meaning genetic materials are inside. It will need to be analysed.”

“No shit Sherlock,” Tom mumbled to himself, realising his guess was right.

Tom and Captain Brown thanked Triton and Pisces. Promising to keep them appraised of what any analysis discovers. The four made their farewells. Triton and Pisces swimming back out to sea. Tom and Captain Brown made their way across the slippery rocks to the beach. Once on the dry pebbles of the beach, the old grey cat that Kitty was talking to the previous evening walked up.

“Tom, hello, I am Balthazar, the local commissionaire. I’ll take that and the proper authorities can have a closer look.” The Grey cat said reaching for the yellow box.

Tom still not 100% sure held it out of his reach. Tom stepped back to the water’s edge, guessing that the cat wouldn’t want to get wet.

“Tom, give the box to Balthazar,” Captain Brown scolded.

Tom pondered the evidence, but the hairs were standing up on the back of his neck. Something wasn’t adding up. Whilst there were lots of cats, dogs, the human mother and daughter on the beach watching the merpeople. They all seemed to keep their distance around the three of them stood at the edge of the water. Sarah and her kittens were still on the grassy knoll, now joined by Kitty.

“Lucy, Lucy, can you join us?” Tom shouted up to Lucy, waving to attract her attention. He needed a second opinion.

Lucy casually walked down to the water’s edge, but like Balthazar stayed up on the dryer pebbles.

“Lucy, this box, I assume this box is specific only to the IGC?” Tom asked her, showing her the box and the logo on the lid, but kept a grasp on the box.

“Yes, it is like the ones we used in the labs when I was an intern there.”

“So I am right, IGC stands for the Institute for Genetic Control and these boxes aren’t openly sold?”

“No. They are internal for important genetic samples only. They aren’t allowed to leave the institute, in fact; I never saw them outside the labs.”

Balthazar cut in on the conversation, flexing his authoritarian muscles. “More the reason for the proper authorities to examine the contents. Give me the box and I will return it to the institute.”

“No, that is the worst thing you can do, can’t you see? Have you not watched any films like James Bond, Jason Bourne, or Mission impossible?” Tom pleaded, now deciding to stand his ground and dig his heels in, especially as things were more obvious now.

All three of the others in the group looked puzzled at Tom. Obviously, all three were oblivious to those references.

“There is a mole at the institute. Somehow this badger Brock has got to someone at the institute. Whether by money, force, or blackmail and got them to provide this material. Tor Rock must be some kind of drop off point. Whatever is in that box is important enough to kill a mermaid. A princess, no less, so it isn’t unreasonable to assume that they have at least one mole accomplice or more within the institute. So if you return this box to the institute, there is a high risk that it will find its way back to the mole or moles. Then they will pass it on to Brock the badger.”

Lucy whilst initially shocked was now showing realisation on her face. Both Captain Brown and Balthazar looked incredulously at such a notion.

“No, that is ridiculous. It wouldn’t be possible. There are rules and procedures to protect genetic materials.” Balthazar stated, his patience wearing thin.

“But this Badger Brock is not playing by the rules, proven by this box making its way out of the IGC and that he is willing to kill for it. He is not playing by your rules and it is your rules that tie you down and give him that freedom.”

Tom realised he needed to demonstrate his point of view. An old Christmas game came to mind. His grandmother used to tease him with this trick every year on Christmas Day. He bent down and collected a small pebble. Propping the box between his thighs, he held out his two upturned palms of his hands, one with the penny-sized pebble in.

“Right, see the pebble?” He then closed his hands into two fists. Hiding his hands behind his back, he pretended to juggle the pebble between his hands. He then presented his two closed fists to the group.

“Where is the pebble now?”

“Oh, this is a ridiculous parlour game it’s in your right. We have a 50/50 chance of being right,” Balthazar exclaimed, pointing to Tom’s right fist.

Tom opened his right fist to show it was empty.

“So it is in your left,” Captain Brown stated.

Tom opened his left, to show it was also empty saying, “I win.”

“You cheated!” Balthazar spat the words out in disgust.

“No, I didn’t play by your inferred rules,” Stated Tom. He reached to his back pocket to retrieve the pebble and show he still had it.

“And that is what Brock the Badger is doing. If that box returns to the institute, we will learn nothing. This would have been a delay and Brock will receive it regardless, by hook or by crook.”

Now even Balthazar and Captain Brown nodded in realisation.

“The fact that this box has been found and what it contains cannot go further than this group. Only the four of us can know. Let Brock search around Tor rock trying to find his precious cargo. Let’s keep him in the dark. Lucy, would you be able to examine the contents of this box? Is this something within your capabilities?” Tom asked.

“Oh yes. This was the work I was doing at the institute during my internship. I can log into the networks to check data. With the right equipment from the institute, I could soon make initial observations.”

“No, nothing can link us to the institute. Any moles could see that kind of activity. They will alert Brock and we would have him on our doorstep. Everything has to be done in secret. You can only use readily available over-the-counter equipment and use readily available data. We must isolate everything from the institute and any moles. Balthazar, this cannot go any further. With Brock willing to kill a Mermaid princess if anything were to link that box to this village, who knows what could happen?”

Now both Balthazar and Captain Brown were nodding in agreement, Lucy was now not so sure.

Tom asked Lucy, “So would that be possible, with over-the-counter equipment?”

“Possible, difficult, and it will take a little longer. But possible,” Lucy said, now realising she had a project to get her teeth into over the summer holidays.

Balthazar spoke up, now on board with the project. “I can make funds available, but I will need to report something to show for the funding.”

“Makeup anything you need to. Funding to review discovered pollution or something. Hopefully, we will only need cover for a short while until we know what is inside this box, but no names. Outside of this group of us, no one can know mine or Lucy’s identity. Then if things then go south, we have some protection of anonymity. Call me James… James Bond and Lucy can be Miss Moneypenny.”

Tom was on a roll now, excited at being involved in some spy cloak and dagger work, just like James Bond.

“James Bond the children’s books?” Lucy exclaimed.

Tom thought Tom Cruise would be too close to his own name… “Ok, how about Dwayne Dibley?” Tom nearly laughed out loud at that notion, being the alter ego of the ship’s cat in the series Red Dwarf.

The three looked bemused again with such a strange name choice. “Dwayne Dibley it is,” Balthazar pleased at being finally allowed to make a decision.

“Lucy, there is an empty cottage two doors down from your mum’s. I can open that up for you to use,” Said Captain Brown now also buying into the project.

“That would be better, to isolate the experiment, but no entering from the front. Lucy, there is a path along the rear of the cottages you can use. So no one sees anyone coming or going from the ghost laboratory,” Tom said, enjoying his role in this.

“Okay, so if Lucy, er, Miss Moneypenny can give me a list of what she needs in the next day or so, we can get started. Tom, er, Dwayne you are bordering on paranoia, but I see your argument,” Balthazar agreed. He nodded at them all and took his leave up the beach.

“Well, Lucy, what do you think? Can you and Tom pull this off?” Captain Brown asked.

“Well, if I can get equipment, it will certainly be an interesting project for the summer. I will start a plan and make a list to give you.” Lucy answered.
